The UTS Blackfriars precinct may be a hive of activity, with the new childcare centre well underway, but there is more transformation on the horizon.
UTS is getting ready to embark on the design and construction of a new ‘industry hub’ at Blackfriars, to be located in the place of the current childcare centre (below) once the new one opens.
A new industry hub will be the next step in the transformation of the Blackfriars precinct
A design competition launched this month which saw six architectural firms invited to submit designs for the building. The six firms include three from the NSW Government Architect’s (GANSW) ‘design excellence’ list, one from GANSW’s list of emerging design practices and a selected interstate firm with relevant educational facility experience.
Submissions are due in early August with the winning design expected to be announced by September 2017.
UTS is no stranger to design competitions for its state-of-the-art facilities, with the Broadway Building, Thomas St Building, Alumni Green, Great Hall upgrade and Aerial Function Centre all products of a competition process.
Why do we need another building?
In a nutshell:
- As an industry hub, the new facility will provide a range of spaces that will both encourage and enhance industry engagement at UTS as well as research.
- In doing so, it will also support academic and student growth into the future.
- Flexibility and ‘futureproofing’ will be at the heart of the building’s design, which is likely to have other uses including learning and teaching, in line with university demand and changing priorities.
- The new building will also further invigorate the university’s Blackfriars precinct, which has significant heritage value and a rich, 130-year history as an educational precinct.
What does the design competition involve?
Following the design submissions, a panel of jurors from both within and external to UTS will assess them based on a series of criteria. A winning design will then be selected.
We look forward to sharing the winning design and vision for the new facility with our UTS community and beyond later in the year. At this time, there will also be more information available about the construction program and associated impacts.
