The UTS Animal Logic Academy (ALA) received the best New Year’s gift it could have wished for – a new purpose-built space on levels 3 and 4 of Building 15.
Following a tightly scheduled four-month refurbishment, construction and fit-out of the level 4 studio and level 3 staff workspace were successfully delivered two days prior to Christmas 2016, right on schedule. This allowed ALA and ITD to commission and test computers and AV over the break.
ALA took up residence in its distinctive space in early January ahead of the first intake of students commencing, and is currently settling in, following a celebratory event that doubled as a ‘space-warming’ and a thank you to other building tenants for their cooperation with the refurbishment.

Work continues on level 3
While delivery of the ALA space was a major milestone, work continues in Building 15 to ensure the remainder of level 3 – to be occupied by the Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation program – achieves practical completion by the end February, ready for the start of teaching in March 2017.
Electrical and air-conditioning works, painting and floor-polishing are just some of the activities underway, and furniture for both staff and student areas has now arrived.
Elsewhere in Building 15
The investment in upgrading Building 15 extends beyond learning and staff spaces to infrastructure and common areas. Other recent and future projects include:
- replacement of the switchboard to meet the building’s power needs well into the future – completed during December 2016
- refurbishment of the fire stairs, and the entrance and foyer off Harris St – scheduled for early 2017
- replacement of the roller door to Omnibus Lane with a folding glass door, with a view to potential activation of the loading dock area in the future – scheduled for March/April 2017.
