Laneway enhancements begin with new doors from Wattle St
The first phase of a project to transform the Penny Lane laneway into a more engaging and welcoming space will get underway during December 2016, with the installation of new doors and enclosure from Wattle St.
The appeal of the laneway, located between Buildings 10 and 11 and linking Wattle and Jones streets, has thus far been limited by a wind tunnel effect, but all that is about to change.
As the artist impression below shows, a steel portal will be installed from Wattle St, with automatic doors opening into the laneway, inhibiting the wind and enhancing the amenity of the thoroughfare. This will provide the foundation for future enhancements of the space. The laneway entrance at Jones St will remain the same.

As part of the project to install the new doors, works to the stormwater drainage system beneath the laneway will be undertaken, requiring the removal of some pavers.
The project team and contractor will take steps to minimise disruption as a result of the works, however there may be some impact as follows:
- Access: The laneway will be partially closed at the Wattle St end during the works, however the Jones St entry will remain open.
- Noise: Some noise impact may be experienced by those in close proximity to the laneway, particularly during removal of the pavers. However, this will be short-term and noisy work will largely be completed out of hours.
- Visual amenity: Safety hoarding will be erected around the site, and also around the materials storage zone outside Building 11. Please keep an eye out for signage and do not attempt to enter the hoarded areas.
- Emergency egress: The Building 11 emergency egress via Penny Lane (Wattle Street end) will exit through the hoarded area. Please take care when exiting via the stairs and through the work site.
Your patience is appreciated as we enhance this space for staff, students and the local community.
Access from Jones St to the Penny Lane bar and café will be maintained during the works.
