Hoarding and street art mark the start of Building 2’s transformation
What a difference a week makes! Just a few days ago, Building 2’s Broadway façade was getting all the love, courtesy of a dynamic piece of street art. Since then, all the action has moved to Alumni Green and Jones St, where safety hoarding is rapidly going up.
The two metre hoarding is progressively enveloping the building in an anti-clockwise direction, and has closed a large section of Jones St between Broadway and Thomas St (shown in orange on the plan below) to create a work site and provide access for construction trucks.
A section of Jones St is closed as safety hoarding goes up.
Anyone crossing Jones St will need to do so outside Building 7 or at Broadway, while those walking along Jones St will need to use the western footpath outside Buildings 10 and 11. Traffic and pedestrian management teams will be in place on Jones St to assist while construction works are underway. Please follow their requests and be mindful of safety at all times.
Following the installation of the Jones St hoarding, work will start on Broadway, where a temporary fence will be erected initially, although pedestrian access to the side entry into the Tower from the Broadway/Jones St corner will be retained. Pending the appropriate permit, a hoarding that protects pedestrians from above will be installed along the Broadway facade by late September/October, replacing the fence. At this point, the side entry will close, and access to and from Broadway will be via the main doors only.
Access and other impacts
The installation of the hoarding and closure of the sliding doors will impact how the UTS community gets from A to B in the vicinity of Building 2. There will also be impacts to Building 1 fire egress and amenities on the corner of Broadway and Jones St. Please take the time to become familiar with these impacts to minimise any inconvenience.
From hoarding to canvas
The eye-popping street art on Building 2’s Broadway façade is probably a clue that this construction project is not all going to be all about cranes and jackhammers.
UTS always pushes the boundaries so expect more artful surprises as the Alumni Green and Jones St hoardings become a gallery for thought-provoking graphics and a feast for the senses.
