Construction of new childcare centre to commence by year’s end
Construction can be a complex business, and for UTS’s much-anticipated new Blackfriars Children’s Centre this has turned out to be the case, with ongoing design development meaning work is now expected to begin at the end of 2016.
As readers of UTS:InProgress may recall, work on the new 84-place childcare centre fronting Blackfriars St in Chippendale was planned to begin following the construction of new site access from Buckland St and the demolition of the Building 21 demountable, which are now complete.
Work has been completed on the new access pathway from Buckland St
However those eager to see the sod turned for the childcare centre – including our eager ‘Blackfriars’ kids who even have their own high-vis vests and hard hats! – will have to wait a little longer while design documentation is finalised and a builder is appointed.
The new construction program is yet to be confirmed, however one thing’s for sure – it will be worth the wait, with the new childcare centre delivering 34 additional childcare places and a range of child-friendly spaces, including playrooms, playgrounds, sandpits and a chicken pen.

So what does the change in program really mean?
- UTS and childcare staff located at the Blackfriars precinct can enjoy some peace and quiet before construction work begins on the centre.
- The completion date for the childcare centre will likely change – stay tuned for more information on the program.
- Absolutely nothing in terms of access to the childcare centre and precinct, which will continue to be via Buckland St only.
Thanks to everyone impacted by this project for their cooperation with access and other recent site changes to date. Your continued patience is appreciated.
