Building 2 changes before our eyes as demolition continues
Over the past month, Building 2 has certainly been a feast for the senses. Not only has its form already changed significantly, with the level 8 slab and half of 7 now demolished, but the sounds of progress have been loud and clear!
It is also the sound of green, with ninety percent of structural demolition waste – concrete, bricks and steel – being recycled.
As we reach the one-month mark and look towards three more before the existing structure is down to ground level, we’d like to thank everyone once again for their continued patience as work on this significant project continues. We acknowledge that this period of demolition can be very disruptive for staff working close to the site, any of our students who are still on campus as well as our local community and we appreciate you bearing with us a little longer.

The image above (which shows the basement levels of Building 2 stripped out) and those below clearly illustrate the level of activity on site in recent weeks and months. It's no small task pulling a building down!
Did you know that simple, practical steps can be put in place to reduce the impact of noise and vibration? UTS staff can check out these top tips. Or feel to drop the team a line at firstname.lastname@example.org.

No pain, no gain
In what should surely be the mantra of our project teams at UTS, this is definitely true of the Building 2 transformation. The disruption currently being felt will quickly be forgotten when our state-of-the-art, glass-encased hub for students and research starts to take shape in 2017 and is completed in 2019.
Design development for the building’s interior is well advanced, and further details about internal spaces will be announced in 2017 so be sure to read future updates in UTS:InProgress.
On the topic of design, UTS is not the only one getting excited about our revitalised Building 2. The new building was recently listed among the ten futuristic designs that are set to change the face of Sydney, according to the Concrete Playground website.

Significant progress has been made since the start of heavy demolition in November, with:
- demolition of level 8 slab now complete and excavators working their way across the level 7 slab
- interior demolition well underway in preparation for construction of the jump form
Check out our first timelapse video, which captures Building 2’s demolition journey since it began in September.
The promised graphics along the Alumni Green hoarding were installed during November. While UTS students take centre stage, a mirrored-effect graphic and a 3D lenticular panel have also been attracting attention. Hoarding graphics along Broadway are being installed, significantly improving the visual amenity.
- March 2017 – demolition complete
- March/April 2017 – construction commences
- March/April 2017 – preparatory works for the assembly of two major tower cranes
