Building 2 begins its journey towards an exciting future
Building 2 has just entered a significant new phase, following its closure at the end of June 2016, with the appearance of internal hoardings on the boundary with Building 1 over coming days signalling that preparation work has commenced for its transformation.
What happens now?
Building 2 has now been handed over to the contractor and is now a Richard Crookes Constructions site, which means there is no access to anyone other than authorised staff and contractors. Behind the hoardings, the contractor is currently stripping out the non-structural interiors and shutting down and diverting services such as power, water supplies and air-conditioning, moving progressively from the lower levels up.

Reflecting UTS’s commitment to sustainability, a vast quantity of furniture and other equipment from Building 2 has been recycled, donated or sold.
Please be aware that some low-level noise may be produced during the strip-out phase as fixtures, fittings and internal walls are dismantled.
From around mid-September, the contractor will commence site establishment, and external hoardings and site sheds will begin to appear around the Broadway St frontage, and Jones St and Alumni Green boundary, ahead of demolition starting in mid-November, pending planning approval.
Down at the dock
As a result of the Building 2 strip-out and other projects, the loading dock on level 2 of the Tower is possibly the busiest place on campus. The volume of construction traffic in the basement means it is now a high-vis vest zone. If you’re working on level 2, or down there to collect mail or printing, please make sure you follow the directions of safety controllers and signage, use the designated pedestrian walkway and be aware of your surroundings at all times.
Accordingly, with the increase to heavy vehicle traffic and construction loads down there, we’d ask you to avoid using the level 2 loading dock if at all possible, and general pedestrian access through the space is now restricted as a safety measure.
What’s moved where?
Can’t find a facility that used to be in Building 2? For ITD or AVS counter service, head across Jones St to the Student Centre on level 2 of Building 10, and use the touch screen to log your enquiry. For details of other relocated services, check out the hoardings on levels 3 and 4 of the Tower, ask the friendly concierge in the Tower or head to our website.
Due to their proximity to the construction zone, the male toilets on level 4 of the Tower near the Building 2 boundary are permanently closed, which means you may have to travel up or down a floor to use the bathroom. Apologies for any inconvenience this causes.
