'Black-out' for Building 15 as level 4 heads for practical completion
It’s all black – but in a good way – for the refurbishment on level 4 of Building 15, which is set to become the new base for the UTS Animal Logic Academy (ALA) in a month’s time.
Contrary to most UTS refurbishments, the brief from ALA – was for dark fixtures, fittings and décor to support the work of up to 80 animation students who will initially use the space. That means a black ceiling and desks, together with dark carpet.
The ALA's open-plan studio space on level 4 is a work in progress
Designed by Baker Kavanagh Architects (BKA), level 4 consists of a large studio with sit/stand desks and multiple wall screens, two editing suites, a screening room, kitchen and amenities. ALA’s staff workspace on level 3, which will accommodate 11 staff, features a mix of open-plan workstations and offices.
Despite a tight schedule and a very real black-out – with power set to be off for a full weekend in December while a new switchboard for the building is installed – the ALA spaces on levels 3 and 4 are set for practical completion by the Christmas break. Commissioning will take place in early January, with ALA moving into the space in mid-January.
Level 3 – Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation
The remainder of level 3, which is being fitted out for the Faculty of Transdisciplinary Innovation's Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation (BCii) program, also consists of studio-style accommodation for up to 200 students with flexible, fold-up desks and chairs that can be reconfigured as required. The space also accommodates a workspace for six staff members, a meeting room seating six to eight, a kitchen and storage for models and other large student projects.
BCii’s space, also designed by BKA, is set for practical completion in mid-Feb, ready for the start of teaching in March 2017.
Thanks for bearing with us
The refurbishment of an occupied building is often a test of patience for the occupants. Many thanks to the various tenants on levels 1 and 2 of Building 15 for their cooperation and understanding during this upgrade project. Alternative workspace continues to be available to staff in the UTS INSEARCH building on the other side of Harris St.
