CMT Co-Director Peter Fray and Postdoctoral research fellow Sacha Molitorisz have been working with UTS Faculty of IT and Engineering PhD student Nik Dawson on a project looking at trends in journalism job opportunities.
The project draws on Nik's use of machine learning to prosecute large data sets. A proprietary dataset of over 8.2 million online job advertisements in Australia and New Zealand have been analysed to observe how demand for journalists has changed from 2012-2019.
The initial data sets indicates that while jobs advertised for journalists are on the wane, jobs citing skills associated with journalism are on the rise.
The research findings will be presented in a paper titled 'Journalism Job Vacancies in Australia and New Zealand 2012-2019' at the Journalism Education and Research Association of Australia (JERAA) conference at the University of Sydney on 3-6 December 2019.
