Huy Van Nguyen is a VIED-UTS scholarship student in the School of Life Sciences at the Faculty of Science, currently in his third year of his PhD in Biotechnology. Nguyen’s PhD study is to explore the potential in medicine, including flavonoids and other metabolites, polypeptides and proteins of rare and endangered plants used in medicinal and herbal remedies in a minority indigenous Vietnamese community.

“The research analyses the genetic diversity and responses of plants in anti-oxidant and flavonoid accumulation and the possible use of superior plants for medicinal use. To gain a better understanding of these compounds and possible mechanism of action in their response, molecular techniques followed by biochemical and proteomic analyses are used.”
“I chose UTS for its world-class laboratory facilities,” he says. “UTS Science has a range of excellent laboratory facilities which enable me to carry out my research tasks involving biochemical, molecular techniques to sophisticated and multi-dimensional proteomic experiments.”
“UTS’s academic activities, publishing and research development workshops are reasons for my decision to pursue my PhD at UTS.”
