COVID-19 impacts and response

23 February 2023

UTS is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, following NSW and Commonwealth Government advice. On this page you’ll find information about studying at UTS and what we’re doing to keep our community safe.

As UTS has always done throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we continue to monitor and follow government guidelines and health advice.

We continue to ask all staff and students to support us in maintaining the health and safety of our community. Please do not attend campus if you're feeling unwell or experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19.

The university recommends staff and students stay at home if unwell and remain off-campus until they no longer have any symptoms.

COVID-19 support

The following NSW Health resources provide further information and support if you, or someone you know, tests positive for COVID-19:

  • Advice for people exposed to a confirmed case
  • Testing for and what to do if you have COVID-19

Taking steps to keep our campus safe

We continue to take steps to keep our community safe. Here are some of the measures you might see on campus.

Cleaning

UTS conducts regular campus cleaning, particularly in public spaces. Our cleaning crew pay special attention to high-traffic areas such as the UTS Central food court and touch-points like the lifts.

Hand-sanitising stations and disinfectant

There are plenty of hand-sanitising stations located across campus, and we also have disinfectant wipes to keep teaching and learning areas clean.

Escalators and lifts

To keep UTS escalator handrails free of viruses and bacteria, we have ultra-violet (UV) lighting units designed to inhibit the growth of microorganisms.

Air-conditioning and air purifiers

In addition to increasing the ‘fresh air’ intake from outside through our UTS air-conditioning system, regular maintenance of the system is helping to keep the interiors of the air-handling systems clean. We also have filters which have a performance rating capable of trapping COVID-19 particles.

Face masks

For more information on mask wearing,  including advice on how to wear a mask, see the advice for protecting yourself against COVID-19. Face masks continue to be available for staff, students and visitors from Security Central (building 1, level 4).

Return to campus - Spring session 2023

In 2023, we returned to more face-to-face classes, social activities and student services. From Spring session 2023, most subject activities will run in-person and on campus.

In accordance with TEQSA (the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency of the Australian Government), all students will need to be back on campus for the start of Spring session. TEQSA expects that all providers (including UTS) will meet the requirements of the ESOS Compliance Policy by 30 June 2023.

To find out when your course starts in Spring 2023 session, please head to the Academic Dates page of the UTS Handbook.

If you're an international student and only have one subject left, and decide to study online and offshore, please contact internationalstudent@uts.edu.au for possible implications on your student visa.

  • support for Zoom and other collaborative learning tools
  • links to support with study, accessibility and more
  • access to health, wellbeing, financial and legal support
  • tips for using the Library
  • support with jobs and careers
  • events and fun activities.

Recognition of overseas qualifications for students from China

On 28 January 2023, the Chinese Ministry of Education announced that they will not accredit any online studies undertaken by Chinese students at foreign universities in or after the first session for the Southern Hemisphere (Autumn session 2023). This means all students from China will need to study on campus from Autumn session 2023 or their qualification/degree may not be accredited by the Chinese Government.

For general information on Chinese government requirements, please consult the frequently asked questions on the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE) website.
