Being able to work on my logical thinking and problem solving abilities has been the best part about...
What degree did you study? Bachelor of Mathematics and Finance.
What motivated you to study this degree/major? Two main motivators were my family, as well as my love for Mathematics. Maths was the only subject I could study for hours at a time during my HSC and that's when I realised that doing a degree in mathematics will be challenging and fun! I have always been fascinated by the dynamics of the financial markets hence why I chose to do the specialist degree.
What do you enjoy most about your degree? Over the course of my degree, UTS has provided me with a lot of practical experience using mathematical software. It has challenged my understanding of the financial markets by assigning difficult, but mind-expanding assessments which taught me a lot. Being able to work on my logical thinking and problem solving abilities has been the best part about this degree.
Why did you choose to study at UTS? I chose to study at UTS because of its reputation of being a very practical and hands-on university. I wanted to practice my degree by learning different software which will help me stand out when applying for graduate position and internships.
UTS's central location was also a big motivator, due to this I have been able to undertake various part-time positions in the CBD as travelling from classes to work was not a problem.
What is it like to study at UTS Science? Amazing. The teaching staff are very helpful and motivating. They want their students to succeed so the subject structure is always up-to-date with industry standards and in this way we get to learn the newest software and incorporate new research into our study. Doing Science expands one's view about the world in general so the whole experience is guaranteed to be an eye-opener!
Is there any advice you would give to students studying this degree? Staying on top of your work is the key to success! I cannot stress that more. Read over the lecture notes and tutorials at least once before the main lecture and tutorial session. This way you will be able to have any questions you may have answered.
What would you like to do once you complete your degree? I am aiming on starting full-time work in the finance industry. I will also consider postgraduate study a few years after completing my undergraduate study.
What other activities do you participate/do at uni? Volunteering with the ATO to help UTS students and staff do their tax return, SOUL Award, BUiLD Program.
Tell us something interesting about yourself I have travelled a lot in my life which led me to changing more than 10 schools.
