Nepa came to UTS via INSEARCH, where she commenced studies in forensic science before switching to biomedical science, and graduating earlier this year (2012). She has found that making friends in university accommodation has helped her to settle in to the Sydney lifestyle.
"I came to UTS thinking that I was going to study forensics but then throughout my studies my interest changed towards research so I changed my course. I love scientific researching – treating diseases, diagnosing diseases and things like that. My favourite part of the course was the lab sessions that we had. When you’re a science student you’re often focusing only on theory, but through the lab sessions we got to experience what working in a professional laboratory would be like.
Samoa is a very small country - our first scientific research organisation was only established in 2008 so it’s still a really young industry. Everything I’ve learnt here will be really useful back home.
I would recommend that new students stay in the dorms. I moved in last year and I’m loving the life there – the experience of living with other people, the friendships, everything! I can actually call Sydney home right now.
I like the teaching methods here, the lecturers understand if you’re struggling with their subject and they find ways to help you.
I feel that I grew up at UTS, because I came here when I was only 18. I feel that I’ve matured – I’m really going to miss this place."
