Our sports physiology laboratories feature modern sport testing equipment to provide an enriched learning environment for students.
The laboratories are designed to assess how the human body responds and adapts to exercise and allows students to understand the science that is behind health and exercise. Examples of our laboratory equipment are:
Medgraphics Cardio2 metabolic cart
This metabolic cart provides users with the ability to accurately assess oxygen consumption during rest and exercise (eg. VO2max) and has an integrated electrocardiogram (ECG) for assessment of cardiac function. The system can also assess pulmonary (lung) function via spirometry.
Woodway force treadmill
This non-motorised treadmill requires the user to drive the specially designed belt without the help of an electric motor, thereby providing a movement action that is similar to flat ground running. Force sensors included on the treadmill calculate work and power output. Exercise scientists use this equipment in controlled environments to simulate the running demands of team sports including soccer, rugby league, Australian Rules football and hockey.
Qualisys 3D high speed motion analysis system
This 3-dimensional motion capture/analysis system has 8 cameras and can assess movement at up to 1000 frames per second, and permits accurate biomechanical assessment of human movement. Customised analysis software permits automated tracking of marker sets.
Biodex System 3 Isokinetic DynamometerThis device can assess the strength and power of any major joint within the human body. It offers concentric, eccentric, isometric and isotonic assessment modes, and is considered the gold standard of strength assessment and rehabilitation.
FT 700 Powercage
The Powercage provides multifaceted biomechanical feedback on numerous human movements. Data acquisition includes ground reaction force and position transducer, and the provision of an eccentric braking unit permits the performance of a range of heavy loading protocols with high levels of safety.
UTS: Health also has an extensive range of microtechnology (GPS, accelerometers), wireless athlete monitoring devices, radar, fully equipped fitness centre, Electromyography (EMG), various dry cell biochemistry devices, as well as a range of ergometry (various cycle, treadmills, kayak, rowing, swim ergometers).
