Major: Advanced Nursing Practice
Sub-major: Acute Care Nursing
I grew up as the second oldest of five daughters in a small country town on the mid north coast of NSW and went to school in Taree. After I completed a Graduate Certificate in Acute Care Nursing at UTS, I got the study bug! So I decided to continue on to the Master’s degree.I highly value postgraduate study as a way of increasing clinical expertise and a great way to gain advanced academic skills in areas like research and simulation.
I chose UTS because it has a great reputation in the nursing profession and I was very impressed with the postgraduate course outlines.
The most rewarding aspect of the course was learning from experts in the field and studying with other like-minded nursing professionals. I also really enjoyed the guest lectures. My favourite by far was Matt from Royal North Shore ICU; he was a great presenter and his knowledge was inspiring. The assessments were well thought out and appropriate for the course. There were a couple of exceptions but overall I was happy with the level of assessment and all of the teachers and library staff at UTS were very supportive. Throughout my postgraduate journey my attitude towards study and education has definitely changed. I was able to apply myself much more in my postgraduate studies compared to my undergraduate degree.
After completing my Master of Nursing in Advanced Nursing practice in 2013, I was successful in securing a Clinical Nursing research position, where I worked on a large national heart failure randomised control trial. I worked in that position for approximately 18 months before deciding to undertake a PhD with the UTS Faculty of Health, which I began in mid-2014. I aim to finish my PhD in 2018 and after this I hope to get a teaching/research position within a nursing or health faculty.
Overall I have (and continue to be) happy with UTS as an institution. I went in only planning to do a graduate certificate then ending up doing a Masters and now a PhD. The sky is the limit with how far you want to go with postgraduate study!
