What did you do before you started your NP course?
I worked as a registered nurse in the emergency department at St George Hospital, until I was successful in obtaining a Transitional Nurse Practitioner position in the department. These Nurse Practitioner positions were introduced at St George Hospital in July 2006.
What position do you currently hold?
I am currently employed as a Nurse Practitioner within the Emergency Department.
What motivated you to undertake postgraduate study?
The motivation was to get authorised as a Nurse Practitioner in NSW. It has been my goal to always complete postgraduate studies and work my way onto a PhD degree.
Why did you choose UTS?
I initially did my registered nurse studies in Brisbane so I knew little of the universities in Sydney. However UTS has been known for having a great reputation and it is known amongst circles as the best university to go to for nursing. I chose the course at UTS because of its reputation.
What have you gained from your studies?
I have gained a greater awareness in research and writing, like never before. I didn't realise how interesting research could be and how much I'd love it. It gave me a greater passion for learning.
What was it like to study at UTS?
Studying at UTS was great. I enjoyed the course and had a great smile on my face when I graduated. The interaction with other clinicians was good and it was great to mingle with like minded people, network and create great friendships. You soon find a support group which will help you get through the course and you can always count on each other. As part of the first cohort of students taking this course at UTS, I found that there was lots of support from the lecturers which made the course run well.
What advice would you give to students who are studying this degree?
Keep your head up and study hard because the hard work is all worth it in the end! You need a good clinical mentor whether it be another Nurse Practitioner or Staff Specialist. You need the feedback and support and a supportive working environment is also a must.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to work towards a PhD degree at UTS.
