Rapido has recently formed a partnership with the IMCRC and Spee3D Pty Ltd to develop a machine vision system for Spee3D’s LightSpee3D metal 3D printer, which creates parts more than 100 times faster, and at significantly lower cost, than other metal 3D printing processes. This machine vision system will enable a closed-loop printing process to improve print quality and efficiency.
As part of the long-term vision for developing research capabilities relevant to this partnership, Rapido is seeking students to undertake a Ph.D. by research in areas related to:
- 3D Printing
- 3D Scanning
- 3D Geometry Processing
Who should apply
Students with backgrounds in Mechatronics, Machine Vision, Artificial Intelligence and 3D Geometry processing or related areas with the demonstrated aptitude for and interest in industry-focussed research.
Developing your research topic
We are looking to work with suitable candidates to develop their research topics for submission. Applicants do not need to have a developed proposal or to have already arranged a Supervisor. Below we offer proposed topics which may be of interest.

Top-up grant opportunity (changed eligibility and deadline)
Students should also consider applying for the Spee3D and IMCRC Postgraduate Research Grant. This provides $15,000 per year for three years to one student, as a top-up to any stipend that the student may be receiving. The closing date for applications for this grant is 24 November 2017.
