If you have a passion for language studies or teaching, the Applied Linguistics and TESOL program may have just the right course for you.
Using contemporary models of language, learning and teaching, we aim to meet the needs of people both with and without teaching degrees. The program provides an initial teaching qualification for career changers wanting to teach English to adults, and a specialist qualification in TESOL for those who already hold a teaching qualification. You’ll learn in an environment where theory and practice are closely integrated to extend your knowledge while ensuring what you learn is relevant to contemporary English teaching contexts. The practicum subjects enable you to test your skills in a real-world classroom. Once you graduate, your degree will be recognised around Australia and overseas.
UTS offers an articulated program in Applied Linguistics and TESOL. The subjects that make up the Graduate Certificate lay the foundation for your study in Applied Linguistics and TESOL. The Graduate Diploma and Master courses build on these subjects to further develop your skills and knowledge for professional practice in the field. Prior teaching experience in a related field, or a relevant qualification may attract recognition of prior learning.
This course is embedded in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Having a Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics and TESOL has given me a globally recognised TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) qualification. It had four core subjects, all of which I enjoyed, that give a good grounding for teaching English to speakers of other languages. I also found the micro-teaching approach used in the TESOL Practicum subject a great way to work with others in a supportive environment, to develop a repertoire of good teaching and learning activities for use in the classroom.
