Why did you choose to study postgrad Sports Media at UTS, and what do you enjoy most about the course?
I wanted to undertake some formal study in the area of sports media as this is an area that relates to my current role in the sport industry. The UTS course stood out as an opportunity to learn in a practical environment – the alignment to the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust and the networks and experiences throughout my first semester have been a highlight.
How has your passion for sports helped you in this course?
My passion for sport and interest in different aspects of sport beyond results has been key to success in each subject. The course looks at the business of sport, global politics and emerging issues in the sport industry and has challenged me to seek news from different sources throughout my first semester.
How do you handle the work-life-study balance?
Completing three subjects in my first semester while working full time was definitely a challenge! Setting a timeline of assessments due dates as soon as possible helped me to plan times when I knew I would have a busy workload and set expectations with my boss and family, who were both very supportive.
I tried to make my commuting time between work, uni and home as productive as possible – catching up on online lessons, completing readings, or communicating with my classmates on upcoming group assignments etc – which meant that when I was at home I had less work to do.
With most of our class members only available in the evenings, planning group assignments as early as possible was a key to submitting on time.
How has the course benefited your career?
In my current role, I work with communications and media departments across multiple sports organisations on a regular basis. This course has helped me develop a greater understanding of communication strategies used, improving my relationships with key stakeholders.
Is there any advice you can give to future students who are looking to study Sports Media, and to enter the industry?
I can highly recommend the Graduate Diploma in Sports Media. The experiences I have had so far have been excellent and you will engage with a group of like minded students and speakers throughout the degree.
If you’re looking to enter the industry, don’t be afraid to reach out to journalists through social media to seek their advice and support. This is one piece of advice that multiple people in the industry have given me and it’s incredible how many people are willing to help you along the way.
