How families use strategy and action to create living arrangements for individuals with a disability in the community is poorly understood. Complexity theory and activity theory provide insight into how families assist the adult child with a disability to leave home and lead active and satisfying lives by creating environments that are supportive.
Families are the largest provider of homes for individuals with a disability but this is an ageing carer population that is seeking to provide or create new homes with the desired attributes in the community. It is important, therefore, to be able to conceptualise the challenge to and opportunities for parents who are ageing and need the community to mitigate the experiences of individuals with a disability.
