Start your AI invigilated exam and verify your identity
Log into Canvas or Blackboard (UTSOnline) to begin your AI invigilated exam.
This guide details the steps for an AI invigilated exam using Canvas as the example. If your exam is in Blackboard (UTS Online), the identity verification steps are the same, but you will navigate to your exam within your Blackboard subject site. Your exam time doesn’t start until your identity is verified. AI invigilated exams do not need to be scheduled with ProctorU.
Before you begin your AI invigilated exam in your Learning Management System, Canvas or Blackboard (UTSOnline), you’ll need to follow these steps to ensure ProctorU can verify your identity. This is important to the exam process as it allows us to maintain academic integrity, and confirm that the right student is sitting the right exam.
Before you're ready to sit your exam, make sure you have:
Logged into MyStudentAdmin and provided your consent to supply ProctorU with personal information (like your name)
Created an account with ProctorU using your UTS student email address
Installed the ProctorU browser extension
Checked that you have the right equipment
A valid UTS Student ID card, or other government-issued photo ID like a driver’s license or passport.
Having your identity verified before your exam can take 5 to 15 minutes, but remember – your exam time doesn’t start until your identity has been verified. There’s no need to rush this process.
If you subject is in Blackboard (UTSOnline), you should follow your subject coordinator’s instructions on how to navigate to your exam. The identity verification process shown here from step 5 onwards will be the same for Blackboard (UTSOnline).
Log in to http://canvas.uts.edu.au/ and go to the subject (course) where your ProctorU exam will be held.
Select ‘Quizzes’ on the left hand side course menu. Your final examination may also be found under ‘Assignments’ or in the ‘Module’ menu. Your subject coordinator will let you know where your exam is, and other important exam information.
Once you found your exam, click on the ‘Exam’ to see more information about it – clicking on the name of the exam here won’t begin the exam.
On this page, you’ll see more information about your exam like its weighting, how many questions, when it’s available, and its duration. When you’re ready to begin the identity verification process, click on ‘Take the Quiz’ button to begin the ProctorU process.
If you subject is in Blackboard (UTSOnline) the identity verification steps are the same. You should follow your subject coordinators instructions on how to navigate to your exam.
If the ProctorU browser extension has been installed successfully on your browser, you will be prompted with the ProctorU welcome screen.
If this appears, continue.
If not, or if you are promoted to enter a password before accessing your exam, check that the ProctorU browser extension is installed and enabled and that you are logged in to ProctorU. You can refer to instructions for how to do so here.
Click ‘Let’s get started’ to start the exam set up. ProctorU will ask for permission to use your microphone and camera for this exam. Click ‘Allow’. You many receive further prompts from your browser to allow ProctorU to access your microphone and camera. Click ‘Allow’.
An exam session recording notice will appear. Please read the terms and conditions and then check the boxes to ‘Continue.’
A new tab will open. Do not close this new tab. Follow the prompts to allow access to your computer’s microphone and camera. You will also be prompted to share your Window or Screen, select ‘Entire Screen.’ It’s important to leave this tab open for the entire duration of your exam.
Return to your original browser tab where your online exam is located. ProcotrU will ask to take your photo. Align your face with the guide lines to ensure the technology can correctly record your face. ProctorU will also ask to take a photo of your photo ID so that it can verify your identity before the exam. You can use your UTS student ID card for this step. If you don’t have a UTS student ID card, you can use your driver’s license, or passport.
Once all verification is complete, follow the prompts where you will be asked to set up your exam space. You will then be prompted with a Good Luck screen before you officially begin your exam. Click ‘Begin Exam.’
Once you click ‘Begin exam’, you will be taken to your exam and your exam time will start. The identity verification process can take a few minutes, but it will not cut into your exam time.
If your exam is live invigilated, please refer to the how to schedule your exam guide for instructions on how to begin your exam.
After your exam
After your AI invigilated exam, you'll be asked to complete a quick survey. We encourage you to complete this survey.
During your exam, you can get support from ProctorU using the live chat support function via the browser extension. You can continue to do your exam while using the live chat support function. You cannot call the UTS exam hotline during your exam, as that will be flagged as misconduct.
Before your exam, if you have trouble with your equipment or with your Learning Management system, Canvas or Blackboard (UTSOnline), you can call the UTS IT Support Centre exam hotline on +61 2 9514 3222. You can also refer to our troubleshooting for online exams page.
Don't forget to visit the Exam FAQ and the online invigilated exams page for more information on exams this session. We’re updating these pages frequently, so check back often. You can also visit the Supporting Online Study student portal for help with remote learning.
