The ‘best of the best’: Advanced Science at UTS

UTS is currently offering a Bachelor of Advanced Science with majors in Pre-Medicine, Infection and Immunity, Advanced Materials and Data Science and Environmental Biotechnology.
The course program was specifically designed to engage students through real-time application and real-world problem solving.
For most majors, student participate in hands-on research projects all aimed to at building analytical and problem-solving skills.
Associate Professor Garry Myers is the Course Coordinator for the Bachelor of Advanced Science in Infection and Immunity and says the degree gives students the capacity to get involved in real research projects.
“Most Honours students have very little real-world research experience, but this course enables students to gain that experience from the beginning.”
The Advanced Science degree specialises in making students future-ready using subjects structured to mimic workplaces. Independent study is prioritised over lectures to allow students flexibility in their learning experience.
Only the best of the best students are enrolled in the degree which is highlighted by the high ATAR entry requirement.
“This is a deliberate choice to limit the class size and restrict intake to high performing students,” said Associate Professor Myers.
“We see that our high ATAR students are typically excellent at written and verbal communication.
“These are essential skills for a research scientist and skills we endeavour to develop further while studying the course.”

My name is Stephanie Town and I study the Bachelor of Advanced Science in Infection and Immunity here at UTS.

In the Infection and Immunity major, I study the biological-type sciences with a focus on research. I really enjoy the research aspects and it allows me to do professional reflection on why I want to contribute to society

Mostly because in my degree we focus on up and coming subjects which is really exciting.

In terms of the Infection and Immunity major I feel that our bodies are particularly important but I really like the health aspect and the fact that we now have new technology is really exciting for me where we can use that new technology to go and investigate the human body in a way we couldn’t before.

UTS shaped me as a person because I’m no stranger to obstacles. As a hearing-impaired person I’ve had to work harder to achieve things in my life.

UTS was very helpful in helping me overcome my hearing impairment in my classes. UTS employed a notetaker in all of my classes and then later on I got a stenographer when the science became a bit more complicated.

UTS helped me capture the lecture and tutorial content in written format so that I didn’t have to rely on my hearing. For others looking to study my degree, my advice is just enjoy it. Get involved because this is the best time of your life.
Stephanie Town is a current Advanced Science student majoring in Infection and Immunity and says the course has made her feel prepared for her future career.
“I realised I needed to work independently in an innovative, collaborative society that embraces problem solving as a way of life,” she said.
“A biomedical career fit the criteria and UTS is giving me the skills I need to succeed.”
Stephanie explained that studying at UTS has provided her invaluable skills that she can adapt in almost any situation.
“Studying at UTS is invigorating,” she said.
