The multi billion dollar cost of lost seagrass
Australia is losing massive amounts of seagrass and the effects of those losses could be counted in billions of dollars, say environmental experts.
Seagrass is an unrecognised weapon in the fight against climate change. The damage is being done by pollution and dredging.
Dr Peter Macreadie from the School of the Environment at the University of Technology in Sydney says the cost of lost seagrass is $45 billion. Peter is analysing carbon storage in seagrass sediment from Jervis Bay, on the NSW south coast. He is known among colleagues as "Dr Seagrass".
