UTS Tech Lab heralds a new paradigm in research in Australia, where researchers from diverse fields work in tandem with industry and government to develop new innovative technologies for tomorrow.
What is Tech Lab?
UTS Tech Lab is a new engineering and information technology facility that has developed with a clear purpose: to lead the development of new, more integrated ways of researching. It is a nexus for expert researchers from across the spectrum of engineering and information technology to collaborate with industrial partners on multidisciplinary research with real and sustained impact. Located in Botany and easily accessible, the multi-functional site features 9000 square metres of office and laboratory space to accommodate at least 200 people and facilitate applied collaborative research. The $60 million Tech Lab represents UTS’s significant investment in and commitment to transforming and scaling our research capabilities.
Why is Tech Lab different?
The Tech Lab facility is designed to deliberately disrupt traditional university approaches to undertaking research. The stunning, cleverly-designed spaces are worlds away from traditional university environments, inspiring innovation and collaboration and seamlessly blending new and more traditional modes of working. Cutting edge technologies infuse every corner, and spaces are open and interconnected so that people and ideas flow freely. Many of our laboratories possess advanced capabilities and equipment that are unique within Australia, opening up worlds of possibility to meet – and shape – the future technological demands of industry and society.
Ready for the future
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a strategic research focus for Tech Lab, linking together the multidisciplinary research strengths within its walls to foster a new capacity for technological impact in countless arenas. Our laboratories and capabilities span electromagnetics, networking and communications, electrical power and energy, data analytics, photonics, autonomous systems, acoustics, multimedia and video surveillance, and civil and structural engineering.
Partners in possibility
Partnership is at the heart of Tech Lab’s philosophy. We’re focused on creating robust applied research collaborations between academia, industry and government, in spaces where people can meet, generate ideas and make them happen. Spaces are also available for contract and consultancy work, and for external partners to explore and upskill in new and developing technologies.
