Designers Donna Sgro and Christopher Mark Kaltenbach consider how to rethink the value of insects, through speculative design research.
Insect Futures is a presentation of collaborative design research by Dr. Donna Sgro and Dr. Christopher Mark Kaltenbach. In their joint project, Reframing the Insect, the designers consider how to rethink the value of insects, through speculative design research.
A reconsideration of human-animal relationships is fundamental to both the notion of the Anthropocene, and the impact of human-centred designing involving animal industries and ecosystems. Insects are important animals for functioning ecosystems, however, they remain relatively unknown with 80% of them still to be classified. Compounding this issue of obscurity, insects face an image problem, the general public often misconstrues many of them as pests.
This research project considers how designers can assist to reframe the value of insects in ways that embed a re-evaluation of their importance in society, heightening awareness of them through altered proximities.
