UTS welcomes the new Head of Digital & Social Media
Associate Professor Heather Ford will be joining UTS as Head of Digital and Social Media in October.
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is pleased to announce that Associate Professor Heather Ford will join the UTS School of Communication as the new Head of Digital and Social Media on 1st October 2019.
Heather holds a PhD from Oxford Internet Institute at Oxford University and joins the faculty from UNSW, where she was Senior Lecturer in Media (Digital Cultures).
Heather is an inspirational leader who brings real industry and academic credibility to the role. We are extremely excited she is joining us here at UTS.
Professor Mark Evans
Head of School of Communication
Heather’s research is about Digital Politics (or “the politics of the digital”). In her own words, “Digital Politics is not only about how politicians use social media and digital technologies in their daily work, or about how new forms of electoral politics emerge in relation to the internet. It is also about how technologies (evolving together with social dynamics) give rise to new politics, new forms of authority and power.”
Her focus now is on implications for the increasing deployment of algorithms and automation to organise and construct knowledge about events, people, places and things.
I’m thrilled to join the Digital and Social Media team. They are a dynamic and visionary group of individuals and I’m looking forward to working with them to build a unique programme here at UTS.
Associate Professor Heather Ford
We would also like to thank Dr James Meese for his commitment and enthusiasm in his role as Interim Head of Discipline.
