UTS journalism students finalists in the Kennedy Awards
At the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, we’re very proud of two of our Journalism students, both of whom have been nominated for Student Journalist of the Year in the prestigious Kennedy Awards.
The Kennedy Awards are Australia’s richest journalism awards and will be announced on August 18 at the Foundation’s gala awards event to be held in the ballroom of the Royal Randwick.
Our two finalists in the new category of Student Journalist of the Year are Eve Cogan and Zara Powell, who have been short-listed out of students from all over the country.

Zara Powell
Zara was nominated for a portfolio of work that included her Central News investigation Free money scammers boast of flood relief rorting about the defrauding of government flood relief.
"My name is Zara Powell and I am a second year journalism student at UTS who is passionate about broadcast journalism. I pride myself on being organised, obtaining a good work ethic and staying motivated with any challenge. I am eager to learn and expand my set of skills that I can bring forward to the work place. I enjoy anything current affairs and hope to share people’s life experiences in a unique yet personal way."
Eve Cogan
Eve was nominated for a portfolio of work that included her video documentary Charging the Red Desert on NSW's regional electric vehicle (EV) charging network, which was her second major in Media Arts and Production.
"I'm Eve – a Greek Australian journalist and multi-media producer, finishing my last year of Communications and Transdisciplinary Innovation (BCII) at UTS. I am passionate about science, technology and environmentalism. From electrification to artificial intelligence, the topics in our news cycle are more complex to explain than ever before and more vital for populations to understand, which is why I've explored them as a student journalist. I've worked with The School of New York Times, The Conversation and The Sunday Telegraph. Currently, I work for ABC News Channel and love contributing to Central News."
