Pub Comm Team selected as runners up in IAA BIG IDEA 2018
The International Advertising Association (IAA Australia) has announced the IAA BIG IDEA 2018 National Champions and winning teams.
Selected at the national presentations challenge on 9 November, THE MILL from University of Technology Sydney, were selected as a runner up from a field of more than one hundred and fifty undergraduate university students from five states around Australia.
As Australia's national university students' marketing communications challenge, IAA BIG IDEA gives undergraduate students the opportunity to hone their communication skills and talents in a real world, career-ready experience.
Dr Martin Williams, Lecturer in Advertising, Marketing & Corporate Communication from the school of Communication said: “This year the competition was harder, 14 teams from uni's across Australia competed. The brief was for Uncle Toby's Plus cereal, a real live client brief from Nestle, which set the highest bars in a truly competitive framework, similar to conditions students who graduate would find themselves in a PR or advertising agency.”
The competition is run within the Integrated Communication capstone, where both the advertising stream and PR streams come together to work on client briefs.
Dr Williams also said “The Mill team went into the presentation with conviction; no notes, with a polished rehearsed performance and a clever advertising proposition. They created a 30-second video and high-quality radio production all presented with a catchy jingle. It was a closely fought contest, and though a runners-up position was achieved, it was an experience of the 'hothouse' conditions 'real world' agency pitches are made of.”
Both our teams admitted they learned much in the process, from working with others from a complementary discipline, putting skills learned in class to use, and gaining first hand advice from top agency judges on their work, that signals their ability and puts them in the box seat for connections that can lead to employment in a top agency in the communications industry

Preparing graduates for transition from university into professional practice, students are invited to devise a marketing communications campaign for a 'real-life' client, working in agency-style teams to develop a fully integrated communications solution. In response to the client brief, the teams deliver an end to end plan from the research stage to the creative concept, right through to the final presentation of their ‘Big Idea’.
These ‘Big Ideas’ are then marked by a jury, which consists of a panel of senior practitioners representing the key sectors of the marketing communications industry.
In this 16th year of IAA BIG IDEA, panelists included:
GAYLE WHILE, Deputy CEO, Clemenger BBDO (Chair of Jury)
MICHELLE KATZ, Head of Marketing, Nestlé
MEGAN HOWARD, Head of Campaign Marketing APAC, Adobe
VICTORIA SEYMOUR, Editor, Mumbrella
DANIELLE McWILLIAM, Marketing Manager, ThinkTV
IAN PERRIN, Chief Accelerator, Speed
Equipping students with a real-life learning experience and preparing them for their careers in the marketing communications industry, IAA BIG IDEA has attracted entries from right around Australia over the last 15 years.
This year’s challenge was sponsored by Nestle as client partner, Think TV as insights partner, Adobe as technology partner and Mumbrella as media partner.
