On October 26, Dr Kristine Aquino and her co-collaborators won a UN Day Media Award for the category ‘Promoting Sustainable Cities and Communities’.
Organized by the United Nations Association of Australia (UNAA) since 1979, the event acknowledges UN Day (24 October) by awarding Australian journalists and media organisations who have excelled in their promotion of human rights and social justice issues.
Dr Aquino and her co-collaborators won for a co-authored article in The Conversation’s ‘Cities for Everyone’ series titled ‘Pushing casual sport to the margins threatens cities’ social cohesion’ published on April 29; and a short report collaboration with The Feed, SBS Viceland titled ‘Foul Play: Are clubs killing community sport’ produced by Una Butorac which aired on June 18. The award was presented by Michael Nolan, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact Cities Program during the ceremony held at Novotel Hotel on Collins in Melbourne. Full list of winners can be found on the UNAA website.
The award-winning media pieces are part of an on-going research collaboration between Dr Aquino and her colleagues from Macquarie University, the University of Sheffield and the University of Winchester, and investigates informal sporting cultures, urban multiculturalism and social inclusion in Sydney, Singapore and London.
