UTS Central News provides journalism students with hands-on experience in a dynamic digital newsroom working on a multi-platform website under the guidance of a professional editor.
Our aim is to give students the confidence and skills to be job-ready and create great digital stories to add to their portfolios.
At Central News, you will be pitching and breaking stories, promoting your byline and building your portfolio - with a professional editor to support and encourage you. The ability to use text, photos, and video all in one package and publish online immediately is the most in-demand discipline in the jobs market.
Central News gave me the experience I needed to secure full-time employment at The Australian newspaper. The mentoring, guidance and simulated newsroom environment at Central News made all the difference in being able to develop my skills, build a portfolio and ultimately secure a sought-after position as a full-time news producer.

Volunteer with us
It’s an incredibly exciting opportunity and Central News is currently recruiting volunteers. Volunteer for four to six hours a week to build your journalism experience and portfolio.
As a volunteer, you could be:
- producing innovative content including print, audio and video stories as well as social media campaigns, and
- working to refresh daily content or working towards a series of in-depth articles.
We are looking for stories that reflect our city and the issues that matter to our communities.
