Welcome from the Head of School
Welcome to the School of Civil, Environmental and Sociotechnical Engineering at UTS.
Our School brings together a diverse community of academics, researchers, students, professional staff and industry partners with a shared ambition: to develop engineering solutions that improve the way people live, move and interact with the built and natural environment.
We are living through a period of significant change. Rapid urbanisation, climate change, population growth, ageing infrastructure, resource constraints and emerging technologies are reshaping both our communities and the engineering profession. Addressing these challenges requires more than technical excellence alone. It requires engineers who can think across disciplines, work effectively with people and organisations, embrace new technologies, and understand the broader environmental and societal consequences of the decisions they make.
This is at the heart of our School.
Across Geotechnical and Transport Engineering, Structures and Materials Engineering, Environmental and Water Engineering, and Sociotechnical Engineering, our people are advancing knowledge and developing practical solutions for some of the most important challenges facing Australia and the world. From resilient infrastructure, sustainable transport and advanced construction materials to clean water, resource recovery, climate adaptation, digital engineering and human-centred systems, our work is firmly connected to real-world needs.
Education is equally central to our mission. At UTS, we believe engineering is best learned by doing. Our students work on authentic engineering problems, engage with industry and emerging technologies, and develop the technical capability, professional judgement and collaborative skills required for their future careers. We want our graduates not simply to enter the engineering profession, but to help shape its future.
Our strong relationships with industry, government and the wider community are fundamental to everything we do. These partnerships enrich our students’ education, strengthen the relevance and impact of our research, and create opportunities to translate ideas into solutions that make a tangible difference.
Most importantly, our School is a community of people. We are committed to creating an environment that is collaborative, inclusive, ambitious and supportive, one where our students and staff are encouraged to challenge existing thinking, pursue bold ideas and work together across traditional disciplinary boundaries.
Whether you are a prospective student, researcher, industry partner, alumnus or colleague from around the world, I invite you to explore our School, connect with our people and work with us.
Together, we are engineering resilient cities, sustainable systems and human-centred solutions for the future.
