Four reasons to take a one year honours year
Considering doing an honours project? Here are four reasons to dive into an honours degree.
1. Learn how to research
While you may have developed some research skills during your core undergraduate studies, that was just the tip of the iceberg. Undertaking an honours project will enable you to develop stronger research skills, which will set you on the right path for your future career.
2. Develop important soft skills
Time management, organisation, deadlines, mistakes, re-writes, hurdles are all going to be part of the process. But you’re going to come out stronger in the end (we promise). The soft skills you develop might not seem significant at the time, but they’ll be important in your future.
3. Be part of a wider research community
When you’re developing your Honour’s thesis and researching your area of expertise, you’ll be working in a community where 80% of the assessed research areas are rated as having a ‘high’ impact beyond academia*.
4. Choose your own adventure
The best part about undertaking a research thesis is that you get to choose what you want to study. Whether it’s something that you touched upon in your undergraduate degree, or an idea you’ve been thinking about for a while, you’ll be the one steering the ship.
