Applying for postgraduate coursework

There are normally two main intakes per year for postgraduate coursework study:

  • Autumn Semester commences in late February/early March. Applications for Autumn 2009 courses will open 4 September 2008. Further information will be available towards the end of August 2008.
  • Spring Semester commences in late July/early August

Faculty of Education
Bachelor of Teaching in Secondary Education (all majors) Letter from Department of Education and Training The Faculty of Education recommends that applicants provide a letter from the Department of Education and Training approving eligibility to teach in first or only teaching area. This letter can be obtained by sending a copy of your transcript from your previous undergraduate degree to the NSW Department of Education and Training (School Staffing Unit), Locked Bag 3003, Blacktown NSW 2148 for assessment to determine your eligibility for admission. This letter should be forwarded directly to Postgraduate Admissions at UTS - see address details below under "Additional Documentation".
Bachelor of Teaching in Secondary Education (Maths, Maths/Computer Studies and Maths/Science Interview and Skills test In addition to the above, during November and February, members of UTS academic staff may interview applicants who are being considered for entry to these majors. The interview will address the criteria established by the NSW Department of Education and Training. On the day of the interview you will also be required to sit a basic maths skills test.
Graduate Diploma in Vocational and Workplace Learning Workplace training position To undertake this course you need to be in some form of workplace training position on either a full-time, part-time, occasional or voluntary basis
Master of Arts in Music Therapy Interview and Audition Applicants will be short-listed for interview and audition to determine suitability. After you submit your application you may be contacted directly by the UTS Faculty of Education to arrange an interview.
Master of Arts in TESOL Teaching qualification/teaching experience Applicants require either a teaching qualification or at least two years' teaching experience
Faculty of Engineering

Master of Arts in Creative Writing Other In addition to a personal statement and CV you are required to:
  • Explain what writing experience you have
  • Indicate your publications, if any
  • Attach one example of your creative writing
  • If you do not have academic or professional qualifications please supply written references from people who are familiar with your ability and potential.

Master of Media Arts and Production Portfolio and Proposal In addition to a personal statement and CV you are required to:
  • Submit your portfolio of up to three selected pieces of your creative work in any format eg film, video, sound/radio recording or CDROM. Clearly mark your name and phone number on each piece of work submitted. You may wish to write a background description of these and you should clearly explain your contribution to the final production. DO NOT submit originals as these will not be returned to you.
  • Provide a proposal describing the project you may make in the Master of Arts course. This should include a brief synopsis, the format and length and a description of your visual and/or aural style (maximum of 500 words).

Graduate Diploma in Australian Law Letter from LPAB You are required to provide written advice from the NSW Legal Practitioners Admissions Board outlining subjects required to be completed in order to be admitted to practise in NSW.

Any additional application material that cannot be sent electronically eg portfolio material or references, must be submitted in hard copy direct to UTS. It is not to be submitted to UAC.

Who can verify documents?

Note: Copies verified by a Justice of the Peace without a registration number will NOT be accepted.

An authorised officer must verify documents. Authorised officers include employees of:

  • the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC)
  • the Student Enquiries Office or Admissions Office at any UAC participating university
  • the Administration Office at any TAFE college
  • Interstate tertiary admissions centres
  • the official records department of the institution that originally issued the document(s)
  • an Australian overseas diplomatic mission and Australian Educational Centres

(NOTE: There may be a charge for copies made at some participating institutions.)

Alternatively, documents verified by someone who is currently employed as:

  • an accountant - members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, or the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants, or the National Institute of Accountants, or the Association of Taxation and Management Accountants or Registered Tax Agents
  • a bank or credit union manager
  • a barrister, solicitor or patent attorney
  • a police officer with the rank of sergeant and above
  • a post office manager
  • a principal of an Australian secondary college, high school or primary school
  • a commissioner for declarations
  • or a Justice of the Peace with a registration number. Copies verified by a Justice of the Peace without a registration number will NOT be accepted.

How should documents be verified?

The person who verifies your documents must:

  • write on the copy(ies) “This is true copy of the document sighted by me”,
  • sign it,
  • affix the official stamp or seal of the verifier's organisation on the copy, if the organisation has such a stamp, and
  • print the following details:
    • name and business address
    • contact telephone number
    • profession or occupation or organisation
    • date verified
    • Registration number – if the person is a Justice of the Peace

The person who verifies your documents must be contactable by telephone during normal working hours.

Entry requirements

The general requirement for admission to postgraduate coursework study is an Australian Bachelor degree or overseas equivalent. However, some Faculties may consider other qualifications including Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas or a TAFE Diploma. Applicants may also be eligible for admission to some courses (normally a Graduate Certificate) on the basis of substantial work experience which an applicant must substantiate with letters from employers.

English language proficiency

If your previous studies were undertaken in an overseas country you may need to provide evidence of English proficiency.

You need to meet the English language proficiency requirements if you have undertaken all of your qualifications in a country other than American Samoa, Australia, Canada, Fiji, Ireland, Kenya, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America or Zambia.
