Applying for postgraduate coursework

There are normally two main intakes per year for postgraduate coursework study:

  • Autumn Semester commences in late February/early March
  • Spring Semester commences in late July/early August

How to apply

There are two methods of application for postgraduate coursework courses at UTS - via UAC or by direct application. Applicants must follow the application method listed beside each course in the Courses open for application list below.

Some courses have requirements in addition to submitting the application. These requirements range from online Personal Statements and CVs, portfolio submission, or simply knowing that you may be contacted for an interview.

UAC applicants need to check Additional application requirements for applicants through UAC to find out whether they need to complete anything in addition to the online UAC application process.

Closing dates

The application closing date has been extended to 3 July for all Faculties/Units except Business and Education which close June 30.

Additional application requirements for applicants through UAC

Applicants who do not have a completed Bachelor degree, Masters degree, Graduate Diploma in any field of study or a Graduate Certificate in the same field of study (or overseas equivalent)
Personal statement and CV
  • Personal statement explaining (in approximately 500 words) why you wish to study the course you are applying for
  • Curriculum Vitae which should include details of work, voluntary or other experiences (eg special interest groups)
Master of Arts in Creative Writing Other In addition to a personal statement and CV you are required to:
  • Explain what writing experience you have
  • Indicate your publications, if any
  • Attach one example of your creative writing
  • If you do not have academic or professional qualifications please supply written references from people who are familiar with your ability and potential.
Attach this information to your personal statement and CV and submit to the Student Centre, Foyer Level, UTS Tower Building 1, 15 Broadway Sydney NSW
Master of Media Arts and Production Portfolio and Proposal In addition to a personal statement and CV you are required to:
  • Submit your portfolio of up to three selected pieces of your creative work in any format eg film, video, sound/radio recording or CDROM. Clearly mark your name and phone number on each piece of work submitted. You may wish to write a background description of these and you should clearly explain your contribution to the final production. DO NOT submit originals as these will not be returned to you.
  • Provide a proposal describing the project you may make in the Master of Arts course. This should include a brief synopsis, the format and length and a description of your visual and/or aural style (maximum of 500 words).

In addition to a personal statement and CV, applicants are required to contact the Faculty on (02)9514 8913/8978 to arrange an interview, at which applicants will be expected to present a portfolio.
Master of Design

In addition to the above, applicants must submit a portfolio of between 5 and 10 pieces of your own work. This may be submitted as colour photocopies, CD ROMS, DVDs, web addresses or show reels. Please submit the portfolio to the Building 6 Student Centre, Level 4, 702-730 Harris St, Ultimo. Local applicants may be required to attend an interview to present and discuss their portfolio.
Education
Master of Arts in TESOL Teaching qualification/teaching experience Applicants require either a teaching qualification or at least two years' teaching experience in teaching English as a second or foreign language
Engineering
Master of Engineering CV Applicants must submit an up-to-date CV as a minimum of two years' work experience is required
Graduate Certificate in Environmental Engineering Management CV
Letter from employer
You must provide an up to date Curriculum Vitae and a letter from your current or most recent employer with a short position description.
Master of Environmental Engineering Management For information only You must have a degree in Engineering or other technological/applied science field. Applicants without a degree but with suitable experience and a TAFE diploma, may apply for the Graduate Certificate in Environmental Engineering Management (see requirements above) and, provided performance is satisfactory, later apply to transfer to the Masters course with full credit for completed subjects.

Graduate Diploma in Australian Law Letter from LPAB You are required to provide written advice from the NSW Legal Practitioners Admissions Board outlining subjects required to be completed in order to be admitted to practise in NSW.
Nursing, Midwifery and Health
All courses CV Applicants must submit a current CV to UAC outlining details of current and previous work experience
All courses (except Health Services Management) Nurse/Midwife registration Applicants for all nursing and midwifery related courses must have current nurse/midwife registration. If your name is not on an online register with respective state nursing registration boards (such as the NSW Nurses and Midwives Board), you must provide a correctly verified copy of your nurse/midwife registration to UAC with a covering letter stating your full name, daytime telephone number and UAC application number.

Submitting additional documentation to UTS

Any additional application material that cannot be sent electronically eg portfolio material or references, with the exception of Nursing Midwifery and Health courses, must be submitted in hard copy direct to a UTS Student Centre or by post to:

Additional hard copy documents should be posted or delivered to UTS or UAC as appropriate, in conjunction with your online application. If you delay the submission of your additional material your application may not be considered. Note that you are not required to submit copies of any formal education (eg High School, Associate Diploma, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor’s or post-graduate course) as these will be provided to UTS via your UAC application.

Entry requirements

The general requirement for admission to postgraduate coursework study is an Australian Bachelor degree or overseas equivalent. However, some Faculties may consider other qualifications including Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas or a TAFE Diploma. Applicants may also be eligible for admission to some courses (normally a Graduate Certificate) on the basis of substantial work experience which an applicant must substantiate with letters from employers.

English language proficiency

If your previous studies were undertaken in an overseas country you may need to provide evidence of English proficiency.

You need to meet the English language proficiency requirements if you have undertaken all of your qualifications in a country other than American Samoa, Australia, Canada, Fiji, Ireland, Kenya, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America or Zambia.
