Postgraduate Admissions Personal Statement and CV Guide

What is a Personal Statement?

A Personal Statement is a free-text written statement, which presents a reasoned case supporting your application to a particular course. A Personal Statement should demonstrate the applicant's capacity and motivation for study in the course to which the Personal Statement applies.

All Personal Statements and additional application material must be submitted directly to UTS, and preferably on the same date that the application is submitted to UAC. The Personal Statement must be submitted online. The link is at the bottom of this page. You can also submit a Curriculum Vitae, if required, as part of the online process, as long as the total word count (Personal Statement and CV) does not exceed 3500 words.

Do I need to submit a Personal Statement and/or CV or other additional application material?

Not all courses require a Personal Statement or additional application material. It is important that you check the additional application requirements table to see if you should be submitting Personal Statements or any other documentation to UTS in addition to your UAC application. Faculties that do not list a Personal Statement as an additional requirement will not give Personal Statements any consideration.

In what format must the Personal Statement and/or CV be submitted?

Your Personal Statement and/or CV must:

  • be submitted online. The link to the form is at the end of this page.
  • be no more than 3500 words per preference. You must compose your Personal Statement and/or CV on your own word processor. You can then check the word count of your document.
  • be submitted individually, if you are applying for courses in different faculties or for courses in the same faculty which have differing requirements. This requires your personal details to be entered each time, with the distinct UAC preference code/s for the course/s needing the statement.
  • be copied and pasted from your document to the online form. This will prevent timeouts and help ensure that your submission is successful. If a timeout occurs and you lose your work you will have to start from the beginning. It is your responsibility to have a copy of your statement.
  • include supporting documentation only if required. This is a paper submission to UTS in addition to the online Personal Statement and the UAC application. See the additional documentation sections on the Postgraduate Study page for guidelines for the submission of additional supporting documentation.

How many copies of the Personal Statement and/or CV should I submit?

If you are applying for postgraduate courses in the same Faculty and the additional application requirements are the same for each course you only need to submit one copy of your Personal Statement and/or CV and/or additional application material. However, if you are applying for courses in different Faculties, or for courses for which the requirements differ, you should submit a separate copy for each Faculty or course.

You should also keep an original copy of each Personal Statement and/or CV for your own records. You should keep the electronic copy on your own computer, plus print out a copy of your submission. You can print out your submission on the last page of the online Personal Statement and/or CV, after you have clicked "Submit". This printout can be used by you to prove you submitted a Personal Statement and/or CV, if necessary. You may be required to supply your Personal Statement again.

If you copy and paste from your original document into the Personal Statement field you will automatically retain a copy on your own computer.
