Nick Davies is one of the world’s leading investigative journalists and a special correspondent for The Guardian. He played a key role in exposing the phone-hacking affair in the UK, writing more than a hundred stories which led to six separate police inquiries in England and Scotland, a series of arrests and criminal trials, and the Leveson Inquiry into the culture and practices of the press. His book on the phone-hacking affair and Rupert Murdoch, ‘Hack Attack’, was published in 2014.
In 2010 Davies was closely involved in the publication of secret military and diplomatic cables obtained by Wikileaks by The Guardian, The New York Times, Der Spiegel and a number of other major news organizations.
Davies has won numerous awards for his investigative journalism, including  the German Henri Nannen award for press freedom, and Journalist of the Year, Reporter of the Year and Feature Writer of the Year in British press awards. In addition to Hack Attack, he has written five books: White Lies, which uncovered a racist miscarriage of justice in Texas; Murder on Ward Four, which examined the collapse of the NHS through the murder of children by Nurse Beverly Allitt; Dark Heart, a journey through the wasteland of British poverty; School Report, revealing chaos in government education policy; and Flat Earth News, exposing falsehood and propaganda in news media.
This event is supported by the School of Communication and the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences UTS.  Nick Davies’ visit to Australia is supported by the Sydney Writers’ Festival. His book 'Hack Attack' will be available for sale following the talk.

“There is one hell of a fight going on in Australia to preserve our free press. We are increasingly seeing the rich and powerful resort to litigation to pursue journalists’ sources or lodge defamation writs purely to stop the publication of stories and scare off the rest of the media."

Nick McKenzie, Fairfax Media, 2014 Press Freedom Australia Address
