Abstract: The availability of 'Big Data' and analytics (computational modelling) has changed the way in which science (and social science, and humanities) is being done. I will try to put these developments into the context of conventional science, show where the differences lie, and suggest why Data Science is such a hot area. As a practical example of the payoffs, I will show how properties of human groups are emergent from data about pairwise social relationships.
