Turnaround Management Association program

Develop skills for saving ailing companies

The emerging specialist field of turnaround management – saving companies in distress – is recognised with the continuation of the Turnaround Management Association Program, comprising three Executive Certificate courses presented by the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) in collaboration with the Turnaround Management Association, Australia (TMAA).

The Turnaround Management Association Program focuses on the key skills areas for restoring value to struggling enterprises and to avoid terminal insolvency. Program participants will develop skills in leadership, legal and accounting aspects for turnaround situations. Each of the three Executive Certificate courses; “Strategic Turnaround Management”, “Law for Turnaround” and “Accounting for Turnaround”, have been developed collaboratively by UTS academics and key TMAA member practitioners. Successful completion will attract subject credits in the UTS MBA program.

What is a Certified Turnaround Professional?

The Certified Turnaround Professional (CTP) designation was introduced in the US in 1993 to create an objective measure of the experience, knowledge, and integrity that is necessary to conduct corporate renewal work. Becoming a CTP is a two stage process. Applicants must first qualify as a Certified Turnaround Professional Associate (CTPA) by successfully completing the prescribed CTPA Executive Program and can then apply to become a CTP by demonstrating the agreed level of industry experience. For more information, visit http://www.turnaround.org.au/ (opens an external site).

The CTPA Executive Program of UTS and Turnaround Management Association Australia (TMA) has been developed specifically for Australia to offer corporate renewal professionals a solid foundation to operate successfully in the turnaround industry. CTPA designation will provide graduates of the program with the evidence of an individual’s commitment to the turnaround and corporate renewal.

How the program works

The CTPA Executive Program is the first of its kind in Australia and will develop skills in leadership, legal and accounting aspects for turnaround situations providing practitioners with the skills to assist companies to recover and avoid insolvency.

The program comprises a suite of three Executive Certificate Courses each providing a holistic solution for practitioners in one of three discrete areas of turnaround operations:

The entire course is of approximately ninety hours duration, and is the equivalent of a postgraduate level university subject. There is assessment for each of the programs and upon successful completion. The Strategic Management course attracts a one subject credit in the UTS MBA program. All courses are prepared and presented by leading academics from the UTS Business School and Faculty of Law and utilises industry experts as guest speakers.

Who should attend

All Turnaround professionals including – bankers, restructuring lawyers, insolvency practitioners, management consultants, interim managers, private equity players, management accountants and entrepreneurs.

About gaining a credit in the MBA

As Australia's premier industry aligned university, UTS has strong links with both local and national industries to ensure that discipline specific, tailored industry courses - such as these, offer practitioners a strong combination of theory and best practical experience.

For this initiative, content design and topic identification for each of the three courses was a collaborative process with joint UTS and TMA working parties meeting regularly to develop the framework for each subject area. All three executive certificate programs specifically incorporates all critical elements, and builds onto each of the key topic areas identified by those working parties.
