Old man lying down with wife looking on. The photograph is of 81 year old Do Ngoc Binh, who lives in the An Lao district, 21 km from Hai Phong; he is lying in bed. His wife, 83 year old, Nguyen Thi Than, stands in the background. One of the problems with cataract blindness with older people, is that they feel useless and unable to participate in society. They cannot move far from their home without the assistance of others. This becomes a problem in rural areas where everyone is relied upon to help around the farm and the family. This photo was the beginning of a photo-essay Amendolia did on Do Ngoc Binh's life and the subsequent operation that freed him from his blindness. Now, in the latter part of his life, he can live productively with his family and the community around him. |
