Sydney's transport system is being enhanced to provide secure, quick, reliable and convenient transport for the Games. For example, the new rail link to Sydney Olympic Park can carry 50,000 passengers per hour. During the Games private car access to the Sydney Olympic Park region will be prohibited.
Transport within metropolitan Sydney to/from Olympic venues is included in the Olympic Games ticket price.
The majority of Olympic competition facilities are located in two compact zones - Sydney Olympic Park and the Sydney Harbour Zone - only 14 km apart and linked by an efficient network of road, rail and water transport services. Darling Harbour, which is the focus of the Sydney Harbour Zone, is linked to the central business district by monorail.
In addition, Soccer preliminaries will be held in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney.
At previous Olympic Games, tickets have always been readily available during Games time to the general public. So, whilst some Events, Finals and Ceremony tickets may have sold out, tickets to many events are expected to be available next year and during Games time.
There will be many opportunities for spectators to view sessions free, such as the Triathlon (focusing on the Sydney Opera House area), the marathons, road cycling and sailing on Sydney Harbour.
Tickets to the Paralympic Games are on sale now (phone 136363 for details). Day passes are available for $15/$8 concession per day which allows access to all events.
The Olympic Games may be in Sydney, but the spirit of the Games will touch nearly all Australians through the Torch Relay - a 100-day journey by the Olympic flame commencing in June 2000.
The flame will first be lit in a traditional ceremony at Olympia, Greece on 10 May 2000. On its way to Australia,
the Torch Relay will also visit the nearby Olympic member Pacific nations of Samoa, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Guam, Nauru, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu and American Samoa.
On 8 June 2000, the flame will arrive at Uluru (Ayers Rock) to commence the Australian leg of the relay. From there, 10,000 torchbearers will carry the torch around and across Australia on a 100-day journey to the Opening Ceremony at the Sydney Olympic Stadium on 15 September.
Torchbearers will be announced on Australia Day, 26 January 2000.
