With our ageing population and mounting demands on nurses, are current models of dementia care delivering the best quality of life possible to the most vulnerable in our communities?
Though evidence shows a 'person-centred' approach to dementia care achieves greater wellbeing, few facilities in Australia successfully deliver this simple and cost-saving solution. Can Australia afford to maintain outdated modes of dehumanising care that lead to nurse burnout, over-medication and costly over-management of people in emotional distress?
Offering insights for health professionals and broader community, this lecture highlights challenges facing Australia in caring for people with dementia. It suggests pathways for better preparing health professionals to deliver enhanced outcomes for people in their care as well as their own greater satisfaction.
