UTSpeaks: Getting about green?
What will life be like in Sydney after the oil age?

April 3rd 2008

Rising fuel prices, diminishing oil, demands to cut greenhouse emissions and endless new tolls to travel on congested roads. What future do we face as a society that’s addicted to cars?

Featuring three expert presenters, this public lecture examines the urgent issues facing Sydney’s drivers and struggling traffic infrastructure providers. With peak oil upon us, can new technologies and biofuels safeguard the family car? Is an effective public transport system possible anytime soon and what shape will our cities take on as freeways strain to keep this big city moving?

Dr Garry Glazebrook
A Senior Lecturer in the UTS Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building, Dr Glazebrook is an expert on Sydney's urban transport, sustainable urban transport systems and urban development. He is widely published on sustainable transport systems and is a regular commentator on peak oil and transport issues in the media.

Chris Dunstan
Chris Dunstan conducts research with the UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures and is the NSW Manager for the Clean Energy Council. His focus is greenhouse gas reduction, including the interaction between the electricity system and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

Dr Michelle Zeibots
A Senior Research Consultant at the UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures, Dr Zeibots is a transport planner specialising in the effects of urban motorway development and ‘induced traffic growth’. Her current work focuses on changing the way we use roads in our efforts to combat climate change and peak oil.
