The Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building at UTS is proud to release the first in a new series of publications, DAB Documents.
The first edition is Made Known: Digital Technologies & the Ontology of Making, a collection of essays exploring technology and design creation. Made Known was recently at the Faculty's 'Transcapes' symposium.
"Made Known features a number of discussions around the broader idea of a digitally informed creative practice," said Ian Gwilt, editor of the publication, and course director of the Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication at UTS.
It presents a series of convergent viewpoints and activities that find common ground through the possibilities offered in a fabrication process facilitated by information technology.
Featuring in this book are Mark Titmarsh on the ontology of painting; Steve Hatzellis writing on aesthetics, complexity theory and technology; and Ian Gwilt who explores the creative context for the computer interface. It also has an introduction written by Prof Andrew Benjamin, Associate Dean for Research at the Faculty.
The first DAB Document, Made Known was developed from an exhibition of the same name (shown at the UTS Art Gallery in 2005), an international collection of Rapid Prototype 3D digitally printed sculptures and animation works. Made Known also documents this exhibition.
As a series, DAB Documents aims to provide leadership and inspire the design world.
"As a practice-oriented university, we have a leadership responsibility. However, beyond simply providing leadership and through DAB Documents, we are making a commitment to the non-academic sphere to share information and passionately enlighten the fields of design and architecture," said Prof Benjamin.
Made Known is available for $15.00 from the UTS Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building by contacting Ruth Ciudad on 02 9514 8913 or ruth.ciudad@uts.edu.au.
