University hopefuls will hear about the launch of a redeveloped secondary education course, as well as other study options, at the University of Technology, Sydney's Kuring-gai campus Info Evening on Wednesday 6 September.
UTS teacher education, which is based at the Kuring-gai campus, moves into a new phase next year with the introduction of the graduate entry Bachelor of Teaching in Secondary Education.
The B Teach, which replaces the Graduate Diploma in Education, is a one-year teacher education preparation course for people who have just graduated with an undergraduate degree and for mature-aged people desiring a mid-career change into teaching.
Course designer and Associate Dean of the UTS Faculty of Education, Associate Professor Geoff Riordan, said the course upgrade reflected both student demand and shifts in teacher training requirements in NSW.
He said the new course offered an expanded range of 12 specialisations including business studies, maths, science, visual arts and computing or mixed specialisations such as English/history and commerce/business studies/economics.
"We have decided on the option of an accelerated program, allowing students to do the equivalent of 18 months study in just one year," Professor Riordan said.
"In coming to this decision we have listened to our students, many of whom are 'career changers' with existing family and financial responsibilities. They tell us that being able to complete the course in one year is important because it allows them to be working as a teacher as quickly as possible.
"Also, unlike some other universities, UTS provides an individual university advisor for all students during their prac teaching. The advisor works with the student teacher and the supervising teacher to ensure that students have every opportunity to maximise their learning in the classroom."
The UTS Kuring-gai Info Evening, from 3pm to 7pm on 6 September, is an opportunity to talk to academics and students from the faculties of Business, Education, and Nursing, Midwifery and Health.
Info sessions on business, leisure and tourism, nursing, midwifery and teaching courses will run from 3pm onwards.
Activities in the Faculty of Education will include a music therapy open class from 7pm to 8pm. The UTS Music Therapy course is also changing – it will become a Master of Arts from next year, replacing the current Graduate Diploma.
Visitors can also get a taste of what it's like studying in the Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Health with activities including an interactive nursing laboratory tour and a visit to the "programmable patient" – one of the high-tech mannequins used to simulate a hospital ward. Tours will run at 5pm and 6pm.
The UTS Kuring-gai campus is in Eton Road, Lindfield. The UTS shuttle bus will be in operation to take people back and forth from Lindfield Station and there'll be free parking on the site.
