The title of this year's exhibition by graduating industrial design
students at the University of Technology, Sydney - Good Form - manages
to describe both the talents of exhibitors and the objects on display.
Good Form, opening on 11 December at the UTS Gallery, showcases the work
of a group of students that has carried off four of the seven major
prizes at this year's prestigious Student Design Awards, including the
first prize and President's Medal for Design Excellence, awarded to
Edward Siu.
The exhibition is a collection of the major projects of 24 final year
students; each project informed by extensive research with the aim of
solving an identified need. It represents the culmination of fours years
of study.
The range of projects on show includes modular boat design, sustainable
packaging for the pharmaceuticals industry, interactive kiosks for
public transport efficiency, and improved equipment for independent filmmakers.
Products range from the high-tech, such as computer interfaces for
medical simulation and portable joysticks for laptop use, to equally
useful low-tech solutions like ergonomically superior market trolleys.
Sponsored by such industry heavyweights as Herman Miller, Holden, H&R
Industries and Freedom, the exhibition will be opened by Mark Armstrong
of Blue Sky design, the team that designed the Olympic Torch.
The show aims to forge stronger links between business and UTS in the
field of industrial design, encouraging greater awareness of the
importance and value of this discipline within the community at large.
