Step 1: Apply for an Australian Student Visa
- You must obtain a non-award – temporary visa Australian Student Visa (opens an external site) before you can commence study in Australia
- You should commence your student visa application process as soon as you receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) issued by UTS. The student visa application process varies depending on the education sector and proposed course of study.
- You can apply for streamlined visa processing if you provide evidence of your CoE at the time that you lodge your visa application. To be granted a temporary visa, you must satisfy all requirements set by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) (opens an external site)
- Your temporary visa includes permission to work. You are allowed to work up to 40 hours per fortnight (14 days) during semester period and full time during the vacation period. Note that you are not allowed to work until you have started your course.
Step 2: Arrange your travel
- Make sure you book your travel in time to attend the UTS Orientation Program. The program is important for learning about UTS and to meet other exchange and study abroad students.
Step 3: Register your arrival details
If you need support or advice upon arrival at the airport please register your arrival details and visit the University Airport Reception Desk.
Step 4: Activate your UTS Email account
In order to complete the enrolment process, first activate your UTS Email account by entering your:
- 8-digit UTS ID Number as specified on your Letter of Offer
- Given and family names
- Date of birth in the correct format (dd/mm/yy).
As a new student, you will need to select a password before clicking on the "Activate your Account" button. Your password must be 6 to 8 characters long, and contain at least one letter and one number.
You can only activate your account once. Once you have successfully activated your account you will receive a confirmation message.
Step 5: Complete Web Enrolment
Commencing Study Abroad and Exchange Students must:
- have obtained approval from their home university for credit transfer of UTS subjects
- check their full-time UTS study load (18-24 credit points) for their first semester, as enrolled by UTS International upon acceptance
- select class times for enrolled subjects
Web enrolment opens in April for Semester 2, 2012 and in November for Semester 1, 2013 and will:
- be available to current and newly admitted UTS students
- be open from 8 am to 10 pm, Mondays to Fridays (Sydney time)
- not be applicable to Study Abroad Visiting Research Students
- not be used to enrol in Language & Culture Subjects
Selecting Class Times (My Subject Activities)
My Subject Activities is not to be used by Visiting Research Students and for Language & Culture Subjects.
- In My Student Admin, select "subjects" then "My Subject Activities" sub-menu
- Log in with your UTS ID Number and webmail password
- View the left-hand side display for all subjects you have enrolled in and the activity types you need to attend each week (e.g. Tut - tutorial, Lec - lecture, Sem - seminar and/or Wor - workshop)
- Select class times for all activities by clicking the three-letter activity type code (e.g. Lec, Tut, Sem etc.)
- "Auto-allocated" means you do not need to select class times as you have been automatically registered by the system for that particular activity
- Select subject activity by clicking "Pick Me" link for classes with space available or nominate activity stream preferences, where applicable
- An "Allocation successful" message will appear if the process is complete
- Once all class times are selected, view your personal timetable as a table or grid by clicking the ‘My Allocations’ tab at the top right of the screen
Notes:
- Dates when the class runs will be provided
- Room allocations are not specified until a few days before the start of semester
- Log into the system regularly before the start of semester, to view updated details and make changes if new classes are added or current ones are cancelled
- If encountering delays in arriving for Orientation, contact the study abroad or exchange officers for assistance
Step 6: Request Subject Changes

- Login using your username (UTS student id) and password (UTS email password):

- To create a new e-request select Create New Application
- At the Application Selection page select e-Request and then Next.
- At the e-Request Application page select the e-Request reason and then Next.
- At the Request to Enrol page select the MOST relevant statement and then Next.
- Complete the Request to Enrol form following the instructions as you scroll down through the sections. Ensure you complete all mandatory and other relevant fields, scroll to the bottom, read the student declaration and if accepted, select Submit. Mandatory fields are marked with an asterisk.
Step 7: Arrange Accommodation
- All students must arrange their own accommodation in Sydney.
- To apply for temporary accommodation before arriving in Sydney, visit the UTS Housing website and complete the online Temporary Accommodation Booking Form.
Step 8: Attend Orientation
Attendance at the UTS Orientation – Study Abroad and Exchange essential international advice session is compulsory and will be held on:
- Monday 23 July 2012
- Prior to departure visit the UTS Orientation – Study Abroad and Exchange website. Information session details will be available two months before the commencement of classes each semester.
- For general UTS Orientation information, including optional activities and events, visit the UTS Orientation website.
- Orientation Period UTS Spring (July - November): 23 - 27 July 2012
- Orientation Period UTS Autumn (February – June): 11 – 22 February 2013
- If encountering delays in arriving for Orientation, contact the study abroad and exchange student officers.
