Completing course within standard duration
- Enrolment and academic progress requirements
- You have failed a number of subjects and need to extend your course to complete.
- You have previously been given permission to reduce your study load.
- You have previously taken an approved Leave of Absence from your course.
- Prior to 1 July 2007 you enrolled in 18 credit points (75% load) in one or more semesters.
Completing your course within the standard duration - Full-Time Study
Under new Australian Government laws, you are expected to complete your course by the end date specified on your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).
Your CoE end date is normally determined by the standard full-time duration of your course. For example, a UTS Bachelor of Business degree should be completed within 3 years. If you have been granted credit or advanced standing then your CoE duration may be shorter than the standard full-time duration.
To complete your course in the standard duration you will normally need to be enrolled in 100% load each semester. This is usually 24 credit points, although certain Master's courses have non-standard loads, e.g. 18 or 32 credit points.
Extending your course
In some cases students may not be able to complete their courses within the standard duration. Australian Government legislation prohibits UTS from granting you an extension to your course except in the following circumstances:
All of these circumstances require special permission. If one of the above circumstances applies to you, and you wish to apply to extend your course, you must submit a request for a new Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) to UTS International. You can use your new Confirmation of Enrolment to apply for a new student visa.
Is 18 credit points still considered full-time study?
Prior to 1 July 2007, international students were permitted to enrol in 18 credit points per semester (75% load), as this was considered full time. From 1 July, international students on student visas must enrol in 24 credit points per semester unless they have received formal permission to reduce their load.
If you reduced your load to 18 credit points prior to 1 July 2007, you may not be able to complete your course within the duration of your CoE. As a special transition arrangement, you will be permitted to extend your course to complete. However, you must now enrol in 24 credit points each semester unless you have formal permission to reduce your load.
