English language proficiency requirements
If your education prior to studying at UTS was conducted in English, an official document from your institution certifying that the medium of instruction was English must be sent with your application.
If your previous education was not conducted in English, you are required to demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken English comprehension and expression by completing an English language test.
Detailed below are the English language test results required to meet UTS English language requirements for entry into:
- Undergraduate coursework
- Postgraduate
Special consideration regarding English language requirements may be given to the following:
- students sponsored through aid programs (such as AusAID)
- students from Denmark, Norway or Sweden.
In some countries the Australian Embassy may have different English language requirements for those seeking a student visa. Check with your nearest Australian Diplomatic Post before registering for an English language test.

Applicants to the Bachelor of Nursing (C10122), Bachelor of Nursing Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (C10123) and Bachelor of Midwifery (C10225), with secondary, vocational or higher education qualification where the applicant furnishes evidence that English was the medium of instruction, will be acceptable from the following countries:
- Australia
- New Zealand
- United Kingdom
- Republic of Ireland
- United States
- Canada (Canadian documents would need to verify English as the language of instruction);
- American Samoa
- Fiji
- Kenya
- Papua New Guinea
- Singapore
- Solomon Islands
- South Africa
- Zambia.
Applicants with secondary, vocational or higher education qualification where English was the medium of instruction from countries other than the above listed will be required to demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken English comprehension and expression by completing an English Language Test.

For entry into postgraduate research courses, successful completion of the UTS Graduate Certificate in English for Academic Purposes also meets the English language requirements.
UTS accepts results from the Combined Universities Language Test (CULT) conducted by the Institute of Languages at the University of New South Wales. For most courses, an overall result of at least 65 per cent is required. Humanities and Social Sciences and Teacher Education courses require a minimum CULT result of 70 per cent.
Courses conducted in languages other than English
For entry into courses conducted in languages other than English, you must reach the level of language proficiency specified for the course and may be required by the UTS Academic Board to take a special test in the given language.
You must also demonstrate a reasonable English proficiency level which enables your participation at UTS and for social interaction in Australia. The levels required are:
- IELTS (academic strand) overall score of 5.0
- TOEFL (paper-based) result of 510
- TOEFL (computer-based) score of 180.

You are required to submit results from one of the tests to satisfy the UTS English language proficiency requirement for the course you are applying.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
If you sit the TOEFL test, you must arrange for the official score report to be sent directly to UTS.
