Nationality: Greek Cypriote
I wanted to study in Australia. I had a scholarship to study in America but after doing research into the courses available I thought that the UTS degree seemed to be the most challenging and respected.
I love Sydney, the technology, architecture and the city here are really amazing and UTS has so many facilities
People in Sydney are very open minded. You can do whatever you want to do and people respect your opinion. There is no gender discrimination and as a woman I feel much more free.
Since I was little I have always liked the creative arts, design, acting, singing and I wanted to combine all of that together. That’s why I chose visual communications at UTS”.
The course is excellent. At the beginning it was quite stressful, I was asking my lecturers for help and they were willing to put in the extra time to help me both psychologically and with work. When you try, they are always willing to help, they are trying to get the best out of you. They are always happy to help but they expect you to put the work in as well.
I love the fact that my degree combines so many elements. I do a lot of video subjects and it means that you have to be interested in music and creative arts as well. I like the fact that we combine hand generated and computer generated work. Its not something ordinary or boring at all.”
I’d eventually like to get into the video music industry
I gave my demo to a few radio stations and it just went crazy. Three companies approached me produce my album and they wanted me to stay to prepare for the Euro-vision song contest but I wanted to come back to UTS and finish my degree.
UTS has a good reputation back home. People are impressed when I tell them I go to UTS.

Name: Jung-Hyan Shaun Lee
Degree: Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business
Age: 24
Nationality: Korean
Jung-Hyan Shaun Lee has been in Australia for eight years, previously attended Kings School. He has just returned from 2 ½ years Military service in Korea.
I was very interested in Business and had heard that Business at UTS was one of the best courses in Sydney with a very practical focus and good graduate job opportunities. Once I was here I found out that the Law programs here were very good as well and I am now becoming more interested in that side of my degree.
So far my degree has been very academically focussed, I am looking forward to my practical legal training in fourth year, which is something that only UTS offers in Sydney.
At the moment I live in the city, right next to Central Station, I’m about 5 minutes away from UTS, I really like the city.
Over the last few years the facilities at UTS have expanded a lot. When I returned from Korea this year I couldn’t believe how many new computers there were.
When I finish I would like to go to the US to study international law.
UTS is in the middle of the City, the location is the best compared to other Universities in Sydney.
UTS offers more flexibility in your study. They give you a choice in where you want to take your study in terms of subjects.
UTS business is recognised as one of the best Business degrees in Australia.

Name: Sarah Hilmer
Degree: Master of Law and Legal Practice
Age: 25
Nationality: German
Undergraduate Qualifications: Bachelor of Laws from Trier
I decided to obtain a UTS degree because I didn’t want to be confined in my legal career to Europe and Germany. A common law degree from UTS means I can practice in any commonwealth country and gives me fresh perspectives in international law.
Having already studied for five years in a civil law country I didn’t want to start again here with a Bachelor’s degree. The Master of Law and Legal Practice at UTS allows me to practice as a lawyer and gives me a masters degree after just three and a half years of study.
I really like the flexibility and range of choices available at UTS, this is something that’s definitely not available back home. I’m surrounded by international students in my course and it’s so interesting to see the same legal concepts from a whole range of international perspectives.
The facilities at UTS are modern and very accessible. The library is fantastic and when I first arrived I was amazed at the range of books and materials which I could borrow. The computers here are up-to-date and there are almost always computers available, sometimes 24 hours a day. I love the fact that you can actually borrow books from the UTS library, you could never do that in Germany.
I’m currently doing three legal internships in Australia, have one planned in Vietnam at the end of the year and will hopefully complete a three month internship in India next year. I would like to travel to India to help establish a dispute resolution and mediation systems, which are my area of expertise. My UTS degree has allowed me to understand the mistakes made by the USA and Australia when they first established such systems so hopefully I can help India avoid them.
UTS gives me a common law degree and an understanding of the English language and commonwealth legal traditions. My course has an international focus and allows me to practice immediately upon graduation.”

I am writing a thesis on Australian immigration policy and the current Australian government.
I think UTS is very reflective of the Australian people. Sydney is a really international city and the students at UTS show that. I have really enjoyed my time here. The teachers, students and atmosphere it’s very nice.
I have made a lot of friends here with people from all sorts of different backgrounds and ages. I have become friends with a couple of my teachers and most of my friends are from UTS
UTS is very well managed and run.
I think some of my teachers at UTS are among the best thinkers about Australian society. I really liked the level of participation in my course at UTS. The course is designed to make you speak to other students and debate issues which arise.
Name: Fan (Frank) Huang
Degree: Master of Town Planning
Age: 27
Nationality: Chinese (Hunan)
Undergraduate Qualifications: Bachelor of Architecture, Hua Xong University of Technology.
I live with an Australian family and it’s very good because it makes me feel at home and reduces my home sickness.
My teachers and the faculty have helped me a lot with my work and other people in my course have been very helpful to me.
Because my background is in architecture I have always focused on building design, I think my UTS degree will help me broaden my vision and get another perspective on the built environment and how it effects the community.
My dream is to become a University teacher and researcher.
I have met a lot of international students from all sorts of places and made a lot of local friends also”.
The facilities at UTS are very good, particularly the Internet and computer facilities. The library is very extensive and I have even managed to find a number of books in Chinese which is nice.
The UTS Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building is great because the faculty teaches the full range of design disciplines. This is good because it means that you get a more complete education here. UTS has taught me how to learn, doing postgraduate study here has extended my skills from architecture to research, writing and theory. My teachers and the faculty have helped me a lot with my work and English skills, and other people in my course have been very helpful.
I chose the UTS course because it seemed to be more comprehensive than many others, I am now thinking of staying on to do some further studies, and research. I have also recommended UTS to a friend in China who would like to come and study architecture here.

Name: Carlos Ortega
Degree: Master of Engineering Management/ Master of Business Administration
Age: 27
Nationality: Colombian
Undergraduate Qualifications: Bachelor of Engineering (civil) from Universidad de Los Andes, 2 years work experience in public infrastructure, piping systems.
I chose UTS because the double degree programs are unique and allow me to get two Masters degrees in two years. Compared with the USA or Europe I get a really high quality of education for much better value.
The thing that really impressed me was the lecturers, they have extensive industry and professional experience and some of my lecturers have worked in the best and biggest companies around. It makes a huge difference having a teacher that knows the industry so well.
Overseas, in the USA and Europe, you are only taught very conventional western methodologies but here you get a real international education. You get that traditional grounding in addition to many different perspectives and theories particularly from Asia and Japan.
Sydney is great, I’ve travelled a lot and I think Sydney is the best city I have ever been in. You’ve got beaches, you’ve got history, partying, food and festivals. If it all gets too much and you can go to the bush and camp, it is just so diverse. Being at UTS I’m right in the middle of it all.
I live in Chatswood, it is a nice quiet place, but still quite close to the city. I want to start a family and it’s a really family oriented place.
UTS has a really nice atmosphere and is pleasant to study in. Its really easy to get to and coming to Uni doesn’t feel like a chore.
Two of my friends from Colombia have already applied to UTS because of my recommendations.
The UTS legal service is very helpful. They gave me free advice and guidance and helped me get the best possible result.

How do you find living in Australia?
I love it. It feels like I’ve been here much longer than I actually have with the amount of things I’ve done. It reminds of back home in many ways except I love the climate here and the people are just so friendly. I love the fact that Sydney is surrounded by beaches and it’s just so beautiful. I think people that live here take it for granted.
Where are you living now?
I’ve been living with relatives so far but at the moment I’m looking for somewhere a bit closer to the city and UTS. I’m going to look at a share house in Newtown today actually.
What’s been the best thing for you about studying in Australia?
Australia’s not as conservative as home, Australians are very much about having a good time. The weather here is amazing and I don’t know if that has something to do with it but people are very active here, they like to go out and do things. There is so much you can get involved in at UTS, people approach you from day one trying to get you to join clubs and do things.
What are the best things about studying at UTS?
Australia’s always been a continent I’ve wanted to come to and particularly to Sydney. UTS seemed like the clear choice because it offers journalism and it’s in Sydney, in a very central location right in the centre of the CBD. It was my first choice really. My experience at UTS will help me relate to more people on a cultural level. I’ll have been exposed to a lot of different cultural experiences that otherwise I wouldn’t have access to.
What’s been the most interesting place you’ve visited?
So far, the blue mountains. I went up there and hiked, it was really nice. Tropfest, a huge film festival in the middle of the city, was really cool as well.
What have you found to be the biggest difference between here and your home?
There are a lot of small differences. The lingo for instance is very, very different. Just little things that I hear Aussies say, I’ll have no idea what they mean, and then I say something that I thought was quite common and people won’t understand. People use tomato sauce here, not Ketchup.
What advice would you give to a Canadian thinking about studying in Australia?
Look for accommodation close to the city well in advance. Just make sure you talk to an Aussie student before you arrive about where’s good to live.
What do you want to do when you graduate?
I love writing, so maybe I’ll go into freelance writing and do something on the broadcast side of journalism.
Would you come back to Australia after you graduate?
Absolutely, I’m already planning to come back here. I’d love to come back some day.

Name: Krisanai Luesukprasert
Degree: Bachelor of Industrial Design
Age: 23
Nationality: Thai
Achievements: Winner of the 2004 National Australian Design Award – Dyson Student Award Competition – $7 000 prize money.
I came to UTS because it’s a young university with good facilities and a reputation for design.
I love the lecturers at UTS, they are really nice and because of them I’ve been looking at ways to promote UTS, I’d definitely recommend UTS to other international students.
UTS has great industrial design workshops including technology such as three dimensional printers.
The computer laboratories at UTS are excellent my friends from other universities were considering transferring to UTS because they were so impressed.
My experience here has broadened my mind a lot, in Thailand I wasn’t this social but this experienced has forced me to be and I’ve made some great friends.
Name: Carlos Mantilla Gómez
Degree: Master of International Trade Law
Nationality: Colombian
When considering postgraduate studies, I wanted an international masters degree from an English speaking country and Australia was the best by far in terms of multicultural tolerance, weather, development and living costs. UTS was my choice because of the subject offerings, timetable, reputation of academics and location. Class presentations were one of the most important experiences for me, not only because it challenged my language skills, but because of the quality of questions posed by my lecturers and fellow students. It has subsequently made me stronger in client presentations in my current position in Colombia. The mixture of cultures and opinions I encountered at UTS has opened my mind to many different perspectives that has made me a more creative lawyer, better team leader and communicator.

Name: Yudisthra Seomangal
Degree: Graduate Diploma in Australian Law
Nationality: South African
I chose the Graduate Diploma in Australian Law (GDAL) from the wide spectrum of postgraduate courses offered at UTS, as it provided me with the opportunity to gain admission as a legal practitioner in New South Wales.
The lectures were on-campus, and were delivered at two different times a day to cater for students with employment obligations, clashes with other subjects or for those who were just not “morning people. I was impressed that all outlines/materials were available on UTSOnline prior to the lectures, which enabled me to adequately prepare for each subject.
I am positive that the GDAL has enhanced my career prospects both in Sydney and South Africa, my country of origin. It has also enabled me to have a more global perspective on legal practice. I highly recommend the GDAL to any international legal practitioner intending to practice in NSW.

Name: Pratik Jhaveri
Degree: Master of Science in Internetworking
Nationality: Indian
The University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) provided me with the practical skills required for an exciting career at IBM and CISCO, and the experience of a lifetime.
Seeing the competitive need in obtaining a postgraduate degree in today’s dynamic economy, I carefully researched every international IT program across the globe. I discovered that UTS offered the most industry-relevant program and had the highest graduate employment rate, giving graduates a distinct advantage in getting rewarding careers through quality teaching and strong industry links.
As an international student at UTS, I studied an MSc in Internetworking. Industry partners played a key role in helping to shape and advise on my course. As a result, UTS courses provide cutting-edge expertise in areas of emerging IT importance and are developed in direct response to expressed industry needs. In my course, resources developed by CISCO Systems were used to prepare me for Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) industry certification whilst I obtained my degree.
Workplace experience is central to most courses at UTS. While I studied, I worked at TPG, an Internet Service Provider, which gave me the opportunity to make contacts and build the hands-on skills and knowledge that employers wanted. Within a stimulating learning environment, I had access to first class student support and recreation facilities at UTS. Computer labs are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing me with networked computers and printers, a wide range of software applications, electronic databases and Internet access. The lecturers at UTS are all professionals in the field. They were dedicated to making my learning process enjoyable and encouraged me to excel. I also made many friends though an array of creative group assignments in class.
Upon graduation, I was immediately hired as a Network Operator Engineer at IBM. My course at UTS enhanced my foundation in problem-solving and increased my analytical ability, giving me the skills that were directly applicable to managing large company networks at work, including Optus, Daimler Chrysler and the whole of Sydney Airport. After working at IBM, CISCO offered me an opportunity I could not refuse – a Customer Support Engineer position where I could design, develop and implement Network Management Solutions.
With a range of expert staff, and strong links with industry and the professions, UTS courses are current, relevant and consistently the leading programs of their kind. All international students should consider the move to UTS as an exciting adventure that will further enrich your experience as a student and then as a professional in the workforce. I highly recommend studying at UTS - it is a challenging, interesting, and extremely rewarding experience.
