Becoming a permanent resident of Australia
Before enrolment
If you are granted permanent residency (PR) in Australia before enrolment, the offer will be withdrawn and you cannot enrol as an international student. You will have to re-apply as a local student and compete with other local students for a place at UTS. You will receive a full refund of international tuition fees paid.
After enrolment
If you are granted permanent residency (PR) in Australia after enrolment you become liable to pay the domestic fee-paying undergraduate or postgraduate tuition fees applicable for your course, rather than international tuition fees.
If you have:
- obtained PR status before the critical date for the semester, and
- you have officially notified the University by that date.
Any international student tuition fees you may have already paid for that semester will be credited towards the domestic fees payable.
If you are waiting for your PR status to be finalised the payment due date for international tuition fees still applies.
If the international tuition fee was greater than domestic fee paying amount you may apply for a refund of the difference.
The critical dates are:
- Autumn semester - 31 March
- Spring semester - 29 August
If you do not notify the University before the critical date, you will remain liable for full international fees for that semester.
If you gain PR status after the critical date of a semester, you must pay full international tuition fees for that semester. After officially notifying the University, your status will be changed for the following semester.
Your PR status is recognised from the date stamped on your passport, NOT the date on which you applied for PR.
Conditions of the Fee Policy for International Students is available from the International fees web pages.
