Permanent residency and your student status

Before enrolment

If you are granted permanent residency (PR) in Australia before your enrol in your course, you will no longer be eligible to enrol as an international student at UTS and your offer will be withdrawn. You will have to re-apply as a local student for a place at UTS. You will receive a full refund of international tuition fees paid.

After enrolment

If you are granted PR in Australia after you enrol you become liable to pay the domestic fee-paying undergraduate or postgraduate tuition fees applicable for your course, rather than international tuition fees.

Note: if you are an undergraduate student you will be transferred to a full-fee paying place, NOT a Commonwealth Supported Place.

If you wish to study as a Commonwealth Supported student you must apply via the Universities Admission Centre (UAC) (opens an external site). You will then be assessed competitively against other applicants - entry is not guaranteed.

Get more information on the difference between full-fee paying and Commonwealth Supported Places from the SAU website.

Any international student tuition fees you may have already paid for that semester will be credited towards the domestic fees payable, provided you have:

  • obtained PR status before the census date for the semester, and
  • officially notified the university by that date.

If you are waiting for your PR status to be finalised, the payment due date for international tuition fees still applies.

If the international tuition fee was greater than domestic fee paying amount, you may apply for a refund of the difference.

If you do not notify the university before the census date, you will remain liable for full international fees for that semester.

If you gain PR status after the census date of a semester, you must pay full international tuition fees for that semester. After you have officially notified the university, your status will be changed for the following semester.

Your PR status is recognised from the date stamped on your passport, NOT the date on which you applied for PR.

Conditions of the Protocol on fees and refunds for international students is available from the international fees web pages.
