If you are interested in finding out about working while studying [opens an external page] you must become familiar with the relevant Australian Government requirements.
Please note that you are not able to work:
- until your course commences; and
- until you have been granted a visa with permission to work by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) [opens an external page].
Changes from 26 April 2008
From 26 April 2008, all new student visas will be granted with work rights already attached. Students will no longer need to apply separately for a visa with permission to work. Note that conditions still apply to your work rights.
Students with visas granted before 26 April 2008 must still apply for a visa with permission to work before they can work in Australia.
The Department's working while studying website provides useful information, including about:
- obtaining permission to work
- restrictions placed on the number of hours you can work while studying
- applying for a Tax File Number
- arrangements and requirements for members of your family (e.g. spouse, dependants) applying for permission to work
You should not rely on part-time work as your main source of financial support.
While working you will have to abide by Australian taxation laws.[opens an external page]
